  1. Because first off, I'm pretty sure the security of my wi-fi has no affect on the government's ability to watch me post mundane stuff to a horse website.

    1. @mrmattimation With an unencrypted wifi, literally anyone who connects to the network can trivially read all your network traffic. When I say trivially, I mean one freeware download and they can literally just log themselves straight into most of your online profiles.

      1. @ceruleanspark Yeah but why is the NSA going to send a guy out to connect specifically to this Wi-Fi network when they could just as easily acquire all my browsing information from the ISP? I'm not denying that this Wi-Fi is incredibly insecure, I'm just saying that using the NSA as an example is completely stupid.

        1. @mrmattimation Nobody said the NSA would be the ones doing that

        2. @mrmattimation Too many security companies massively overhyped the risk of identity theft and the average consumer has basically been immunised against warnings about it, so they've defaulted to the "new big thing"

          1. @ceruleanspark That makes sense I suppose, but if you actually know what the NSA does and how it goes about doing it these warnings mean absolutely nothing. Again, I'm not denying the insecurity of the Wi-Fi.

            1. @mrmattimation The NSA probably would eavesdrop on insecure wifi if they thought they could nail someone. I recall they caught one of the "anonymous" activists in a starbucks

              1. @ceruleanspark Then that means Avast is implying that i am partaking in illegal activities that require a Starbucks to remain anonymous, in which case DEAR AVAST I AM VERY OFFENDED THAT YOU THINK I WOULD DO ANYTHING BUT LOVE MY COUNTRY *waves flag*

                1. @mrmattimation I think the guy they attempted to arrest before he fled across the border to canada probably would have unironically tried to use "I love my country" as a defense.

                  1. @ceruleanspark "Oh, I love my country! And my forefathers. And the judicial system."
