@metaltao Yeah, metal is pretty cool. Metal concerts are really fun as well. I've been to a bunch of different concerts for a bunch of different genres but metalheads are honestly some of the most polite and kind music fans I've met.

@northernnarwhal Sounds like a good idea, I mean, it doesn't completely obstruct your vison like those blinders some people wear to bed and still provides some light and not all to enter your eyes...
Monday, 23-Jun-14 02:42:53 UTC from web-
@metaltao My friends and I all joke about it because it's such a cheesy song.

@northernnarwhal I thought the 90's was? XD remember that hair?
Monday, 23-Jun-14 02:49:40 UTC from web-
@metaltao 90s takes a close second. 80s hair was twice as colourful.

@northernnarwhal That's called LSD OD and you can do it now with little effort
Monday, 23-Jun-14 02:56:34 UTC from web-
@nerthos But I'm not part of the original psychedelic culture.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 02:57:20 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal The experience will be the same
Monday, 23-Jun-14 02:57:50 UTC from web-
@nerthos Except, you know, not seeing the original lineups of Floyd, Zeppelin, The 13th Door Elevators, The Mothers of Invention, and other groups.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:00:13 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Sounds kinda lame but to each their own
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:01:03 UTC from web-
@nerthos >seeing Zappa live >kinda lame >nerthos pls http://rainbowdash.net/attachment/765410
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:02:29 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal It's just music. You can usually get better sound quality with some decent headphones and a 320k mp3 than live.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:03:26 UTC from web-
@nerthos wow
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:04:16 UTC from web -
@nerthos have you ever been to a concert for an artist you loved
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:04:27 UTC from web-
@rarity Yeah. A couple times. It's fun, sure, but nothing to lose sleep over.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:05:13 UTC from web

@nerthos "just music", it's freaking art man. Besides, FLAC > mp3 any day and if I care that much I'll get the damn vinyl. Plus, concerts are a much more intimate experience and are much more engaging and interesting than listening to a studio record. Plus, guys like Zappa would improvise all the time live so no 2 shows were alike.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:06:22 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal To actually hear a difference between flac and mp3 you need both good gear and good hearing, so it's only worth it for some people. The whole "it's art" argument doesn't really convince me of anything, since while I can appreciate the quality/craftmanship/ability of a particular work or performance, the idea of giving esoteric properties to it is pretty silly to me.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:12:06 UTC from web-
@nerthos You don't need great gear and my hearing is fine. As for it being art, that's just on you. I really believe music is a powerful form of emotional expression through sound and is a great outlet for creative minds. Some of the best experiences I've had are music related.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:14:54 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal That's true of all art, though.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:15:31 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Well, some of it. The idea is you're expressing yourself through sound, and you're able to do so much with that. There are plenty of artists who have layers upon layers of sound and create very dense and emotional atmospheric vibes, or other artists who utilize soft-loud dynamics to their advantage.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:17:48 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I'm not denying what music is. I'm just saying the emotional responses can be triggered just as well by any other form of art.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:18:43 UTC from web-
@redenchilada I'm saying that the emotional response is the ends, but the means is very different, and that's what's so exciting.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:21:02 UTC from web
-
-
-
-
@northernnarwhal As I said at the start, "to each their own". I leave emotional expression to people who actually get something out of it.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:18:54 UTC from web-
@nerthos Well I do, so if I'm saying I'd love to travel back in time to see artists I love perform and you say "oh you could do LSD", I reserve the right to disagree because I appreciate the art of that era on a much more personal level than you.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:20:23 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Man you sure take jokes seriously.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:20:55 UTC from web-
@nerthos Well, I know it was a joke but now it's more of a discussion on the validity of music. And I'll totally defend music as art.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:21:52 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I'm not denying music is art, any developed enough craft can be considered art. I'm just saying that in my opinion, being classified as art doesn't give any special validity to any particular thing.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:24:33 UTC from web-
@nerthos But music is a very major art. It permeates our daily lives and has been a part of different cultures around the world for years.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:25:39 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal So is, say, woodworking. I don't really see why you're trying to convince me of music being art when I'm not arguing that fact.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:27:23 UTC from web-
@nerthos Because music is still a major part of our culture and has a cultural and emotional connection with people even today. You won't see nearly as many people form such a deep connection with woodworking. What I'm saying is your argument that "oh well anything can be art so music being art" is unfair because music is more relevant.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:29:22 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Music is no more relevant as art than, say, literature, though. It's not on some elevated plane above other forms of art, and if you say otherwise then you're likely biased on the subject.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:30:38 UTC from web-
@redenchilada No, but literature is also a very major art. I'm saying it, along with several other arts, is generally more significant in the wider cultural scheme of things.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:31:47 UTC from web
-
-
@northernnarwhal You're misinterpreting what I said. I'm not saying anything about the cultural relevance of music or any other form of art, nor stating a hierarchy of arts. I'm saying that I appreciate particular pieces of art, of any type, for the quality in the execution, but I don't think that being art gives things any particular value over things that are not art.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:34:41 UTC from web-
@nerthos But what I'm saying is regardless of your interpretation of a specific art, music in particular has played a larger role in shaping culture than many other arts. Is there a piece of woodwork that defines a generation? I can point you to plenty of albums that have done exactly that.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:36:30 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Dude you're not getting it.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:37:20 UTC from web-
@nerthos I could say the same for you.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:37:33 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I get your point, I'm just saying that you're arguing a different thing, unrelated to what I've said in this conversation.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:38:09 UTC from web-
@nerthos I get your point, and what I'm arguing is entirely relevant.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:38:37 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal But why are you arguing it if I never opposed it?
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:39:12 UTC from web-
@nerthos Look, it's clear that we both seem to be immersed in and affected by music on different levels, and we'll always have different points of view on the subject, so let's just end it here, okay?
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:41:05 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal That's what I've been saying since the start.
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:42:00 UTC from web-
@nerthos Not really, but whatever. Ending this.

@spint Don't
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:34:53 UTC from web -
@spint Wow, that's actually a really great way to put it. Good explanation, I'm going to use that in the future!
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:42:43 UTC from web -
@spint Also, as someone's who's main instrument is percussion, it was really nice to see that little part about rhythm changes :3
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:45:16 UTC from web -
@spint Although, with that in mind, I always love it when an album has great album art. Pic related http://rainbowdash.net/attachment/765417
Monday, 23-Jun-14 03:47:54 UTC from web -
@spint Yeah, even if it's some complex time like 7/8 you still feel it. That's what allured me to rhythm, the fact that it's so natural and also so beautiful.
