@ellie The two compliment each other surprisingly well, as the harsh void of space can be compared to the harsh western outback

Does anyone else think of RDN as a family?
-
@ellie I think I'm kind of the same. Family is a strong word but I consider a lot of people on RDN to be my good friends. This place is a pretty tight knit community.
-
@ellie It took me a bit too. I've figured that as you spend time here as a regular you start to sort of naturally integrate your way into the site.
-
@ellie Pretty much. A lot of new users come and go but there's very much a core community who are regularly on the site.
-
@ellie Yeah, we have running gags along the lines of "this is a pony site?"
-
@ellie I'd say at least half. And a lot of those who are don't even use the term "brony" anymore (heck, I haven't watched the show in a while)
-
@ellie Neither, and for two reasons:
1) I don't feel the term itself is necessary. If I like the show I'm a fan of the show. I'm a fan of Breaking Bad but don't call myself a ChemistBro or whatever.
2) I don't like term itself because it comes with baggage. Calling myself a brony means I openly associate with a lot of the stigmas regarding brony culture, regardless of whether that's true or not. -
@northernnarwhal I can find myself totally agreeing with this... Although in my case I guess you can call me a "cartoonoholic", or whatever you wanna call a "cartoon-bro"
-
@northernnarwhal So... I am very confused by this. Are you embarrassed? Just not equipped to explain your self? Have an image to maintain? It is cool what ever answer it is! I am just confused.
-
@critialcloudkicker "Cartoonoholic" is a bit different because "oholic" is a preexisting suffix that means "addicted to" so "cartoonholic" would just mean "addicted to cartoons". That's it. "Brony" is a new word in itself (well, technically a portmanteau) but it has no preexisting meaning.
-
@northernnarwhal Yea, that is why I backpeddled a bit, I have no idea how you would call someone who just likes cartoons and still have an iconic name
-
@metaltao It's not that, I just don't like what the term is associated with and I don't feel it's intrinsically necessary.
-
@critialcloudkicker I figured you'd call them someone who really likes cartoons. Cartoonoholic is fine though, as I stated below.
-
@northernnarwhal True... but mind you Brony was just a term used that is compatibel with pony. It sounds correct. Male MLP lovers
-
@northernnarwhal NVM You knew that already...
-
@metaltao The term has evolved though, so it's periphery definitions have overlapped its primary definition.
-
@northernnarwhal *puts hat on* :D ---> d ---> d:D
-
@northernnarwhal Just become a furry
-
@northernnarwhal I don't see that happening... I mean, people are getting more and more accepting and informed, the stigma is dying!
-
@metaltao "Brony" either is either underway to or already has attained the poisenous stigmata that "Furries" have. At least on the internet. As for around these parts in the real world. Probably 4 in 10 people know what a Brony is, and only 1 in 10 know what a Furry is, so I guess that where you look is very important. Still I do not think I will ever drop the term "Brony" while speed-dating.
-
@cinnamonswirl What's in it for me?
-
@metaltao It's pretty much already happened actually
-
@northernnarwhal You'll be cool like me and Ross
-
@critialcloudkicker I'm not really even into the show anymore, but I've been considered marathoning season 4 sometime in the future
-
@northernnarwhal I have considdered marathoning all the 6 ( ? ) episodes of S2 I have missed, all the 10 ( ? ) episodes of S3 I have missed, and the entirety of S4 for another marathon.
-
@critialcloudkicker Nazi stigmata? I didn't even know they were Christian!
-
@critialcloudkicker Marathoning 6 episodes wouldn't be too tough, that's only about 2 hours
-
@thelastgherkin I imagined you up on a stage for some reasons asying that...
-
@cinnamonswirl I do want Ross's affection and approval. You've made a very tempting offer.
-
@thelastgherkin And you are going to say that Hitler did not thought of the whole "Pure Aryan race" because of Christianity ?
-
@thelastgherkin JUST LIKE THAT ONE!
-
@thelastgherkin Ironically, Nazi Germany was very Christian http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Nazi_Germany
-
@northernnarwhal They came to power legally, *sighs* Damn
-
@northernnarwhal That's not irony.
-
@ellie With that in mind, I still have a shirt buried in my dresser somewhere that says "Brony" on it (I bought it ~mid 2011 when I first got into the show) and I haven't decided what to do with it
-
@thelastgherkin I found this for you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2krXq8fw90
-
@thelastgherkin It's situational irony
-
@northernnarwhal Exactly, and although the "Pure Aryan race" might have been nothing but an ideal picture framed inside propaganda, Hitler really thought ( or in the very least, acted towards making people believe that ) killing the Jews and everything not fit for the picture "pure Aryan race" in the name of Christianity, purity, and god.
-
@cinnamonswirl That's actually just the definition of verbal irony. There's a load of other ironies.
-
@metaltao Yeah, Hitler just didn't get all that military power before he became the dictator of Germany
-
@northernnarwhal Is it? I said I didn't know they were Christian, which is true. It's a thing I didn't know.
-
@northernnarwhal He rose t power with out killing anyone, but, once he did, he killed millions of people!
-
@critialcloudkicker Most people widely considered evil thought that they themselves were doing the right thing.
-
@metaltao Damn, I sound like a smart ass....
-
@thelastgherkin I figured, since you were joking about how you didn't even know they were Christian it would imply that you thought of them as being non-Christian, however they were in fact Christian. Seems ironic to me.
-
@northernnarwhal Ofcourse since you can never do anything which your moral compass completely opposes. But knowing why someone did or does something is half the "battle" when you want to understand "why"
-
@ellie At most maybe I'll wear it in the house if I'm working on something and don't want to get a good shirt dirty
-
@ellie I might have the same one. Did it look like this? http://s.mlpforums.com/uploads/post_images/img-210854-1-brony-shirt-220x225.jpg
-
@critialcloudkicker Well, there are certainly a few reasons. Power is an obvious choice, as well as wealth (since Germany lost a lot of money from The Treaty of Versailles). Hitler himself also had a very personal stigma against Jews (obviously). He initially wanted to become a painter (and was actually pretty good), but rumour has it the person accepting applicants into the art school he wanted to go into was Jewish, so he blamed Jews for all his misfortunes when he didn't get in. He was also a soldier in WW1, though that didn't have too much impact in his role in WW2.
-
@northernnarwhal All teaching is ironic.
-
@thelastgherkin So it was ironic.
-
@northernnarwhal So if I said "I don't know what 2 + 2 is!" and you said four, that'd be ironic, yeah?
-
@ellie That was my first pony shirt. I have a few others as well including one that says "Luna is best Princess" and one with DJ PON3.
-
@thelastgherkin You wouldn't be initially joking in that scenario though. It would be more like if you said "Mathematical sums? Ha, I never even knew 2+2=4!" in which case then I would say "Ironically, 2+2 does equal 4 and present some sort of mathematical proof.
-
@ellie I still my pony poster up in my room even though I haven't watched the show past season 3
-
@ellie That's because there was only one season of that show ;~;
-
@northernnarwhal W00t Stock has tons of Fire bug fans...
-
@ellie Also I'm now jealous that you own a Firefly poster, I love Firefly
-
@metaltao Stock?
-
@northernnarwhal Water strider? What?
-
@ellie Space western is the coolest genre mashup ever
-
@ellie Oh my gosh what I wouldn't do for that poster you lucky duck
-
@northernnarwhal And my master's thesis to prove this point consists of Firefly and Cowboy Bebop.
-
@ellie Those 2 are both in my top shows of all time
-
