I'm halfway through writing a draft of something and I can tell it's crap and I can tell where I need to go back and elaborate, but I'm torn because I want to reach the end first. :/

@thelastgherkin I think it helps to finish first, because you might uncover new ways to fix things.

@scribus You're one of them writer types. I've written myself into a corner. I'm dead set on presenting the surviving soldiers in a unit in a court martial setting, each telling a different version of the battle that got them there. My problem is that I want to flesh out some of the redshirts, but I don't know if doing that would be pointless given that I've established them as already dead.

@thelastgherkin Sort of a Rashomon thing, then? I think that fleshing out redshirts can help with emotional connection and stuff. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head but I know I've seen things where I know someone dies, and I know their time is coming up, and I still really ache for them to make it because I've become attached

@scribus I'm also not sure how to do that without laying it on too thick. Somewhere between "last day before retirement" and "you'll be the death of me".

@thelastgherkin I suppose if you just make them "real" and sympathetic to the reader, you don't need to go with either extreme.
