>"I listen to everything but rap and country ;)"
Literally anyone I've seen who uses this phrase generally just listens to fastidiously produced clear channel family friendly radio pop music readily prepared for their instant consumption and has no concept of artistic merit, instead using a vague misnomer of a phrase like the one above to feign taste.Friday, 29-Aug-14 01:04:23 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I have no concept of artistic merit and yet that doesn't affect my taste whatsoever
-
@nerthos I have popular opinions to validate my taste so artistic expression and progressive thinking don't matter to me
-
@northernnarwhal Actually all three things you mentioned are absolutely irrelevant to me. For me music comes down to wether it sounds nice or not.
-
@northernnarwhal I like music and stuff.
-
@coltz I'm just being cynical and tongue in cheek, don't mind me
-
@nerthos Well, I mean sure. I can say my taste in visual arts can be whatever looks nice. But there's a lot of music that's intentionally not nice sounding, because it could be the artist expressing themself through the ugliness of the music. But your taste is your taste and that's completely fine.
-
@northernnarwhal And I'm just messing with you, mind me. :p
-
@coltz [MIND YOU SO HARD RIGHT NOW]
-
@northernnarwhal >Minding intensifies
-
@northernnarwhal That is and always will be the main difference between us two. You're about expression, I'm about practical results.
-
@nerthos Pretty much. I'm a really emotional person, even if I'm not necessarily emotionally driven.
-
@coltz Maximum minding achieved
-
@northernnarwhal MINDING OVERLOAD, ABORT MISSION
-
@nerthos I'm just very much a supporter of forward thinking arts and I very much disagree with the idea of rigid conformity in any industry.
-
@vt3c *dead from laughing too much*

@northernnarwhal I'm an enemy of the idea of being progressive for the sake of being progressive. If something's not broken, it doesn't matter that it's 500 years old, it shouldn't be changed. "Progression" is only progression when something is gained without losing something equally or more valuable, and that is exactly what blind progressiveness causes.
-
@northernnarwhal GET OUT OF MY MIND AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH
-
@nerthos I dunno, in such a vast industry like music progression is really important. It's an ever growing world where ideas are quickly repeated and capitalized upon and grow stale. I think once there's a textbook formula for art it's stopped being art.
-
@coltz YOU LIKE MEEEEEEEEEEEN
-
@northernnarwhal GOD DAMMIT NAPPA
-
@coltz kappa
-
@northernnarwhal For me, once there's a textbook formula for something it means it has been perfected.
-
@northernnarwhal Hey wanna play a children's card game?
-
@nerthos It depends on the scenario really. I think if we believe we've perfected art then there's no true need for art in general.
-
@coltz I always want to play children's card games
-
@northernnarwhal I recovered my Dueling Network account, with all my decks. Let's go? :3
-
@coltz Oh, for realsies? I could do a match. Keep in mind I pretty much put together my deck there in all of ~5 minutes consisting of random cards to battle Mushi, so I'm probably gonna get wrecked. But lemme log in anyway.
-
@northernnarwhal Okay, so I won't use my best deck against you. Also, if you want time to build a new one, I can wait, no prob.
-
@coltz One sec, forgot my password ;_;
-
@northernnarwhal That's what tradition is for. To keep things we don't really need, for the sake of exalting culture. Art is closely tied to it.
-
@northernnarwhal newb
-
@nerthos Is it fair to be so closely tied to tradition though? Don't you think it shackles culture and growth?
-
@coltz okay, I'm good
-
@coltz You gonna make a room or should I?
-
@northernnarwhal I made it. Room name is Taira, password is pleb
-
@coltz It's not safe to have the username and password be the same word
-
@northernnarwhal Unlimited, the gray square
-
@mastertdi username
-
@coltz joining now
-
@coltz Is it advanced or traditional?
-
@northernnarwhal Not really. Tradition means having a long background and a wide basis. Without a track to ride on, a train moves crazily and inevitably crashes within a short time. An ever-changing and volatile culture is no culture at all, it's just riding with the tide, and an unbound and rapid growth usually becomes cancerogenic.
-
@northernnarwhal Click the arrow below the pink square. The "unlimited" will appear
-
@mastertdi You're right, my mistake.
-
@nerthos I think progressive thinking isn't driving a train without a track, but choosing to fly by plane instead. A culture so tightly sustained in its ways is like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
-
@coltz found it
-
@northernnarwhal But in turn, removing ties altogether is like erasing the concept of knives and replacing them entirely with guns. Sure, they might be better for the specific purpose of making thinks away die, but good luck cutting up food with a gun.
-
@northernnarwhal Not to mention they're closing themselves off to the wonderful worlds of rap and country music for no good reason :T
-
@redenchilada Dude speaking of, Frontalot's touring to support a new album, might want to check locally for dates (if you're into that live music thing).
-
@nerthos For sure, I'm not saying tradition is bad or should be erased, but I think there's a time and place for it alongside progressive thinking.
-
@scribus I totally would if I had money of any sort. :(
-
@redenchilada True that
-
@redenchilada Aww, damn. :(
