Not really unpopular, but odd and debatable opinion: From a cinematography standpoint, I consider the five best movies of all time to be the Godfather, Lord of the Rings Return of the King, Inception, the Prestige and North by Northwest

@fyf I agree with all of this.
-
@fyf First two are great, haven't seen the other three as far as I remember.
-
@nerthos Cinematically the Godfather is like perfect. The Lord of the Rings series gets plenty of praise, but the third movie in particular is like, a masterpiece, for real.
-
@fyf Not necessarily my list but these are all excellent films

@fyf Now to make you jealous with this poster in my room http://rainbowdash.net/attachment/778870

@northernnarwhal These aren't my five favorite films, they're the five films I would write highest using my general criteria for cinematography. For example, the Shawshank Redemption would be in my top five favorites, even though a lot of its charm comes from the story and writing, which I judge separately.
-
@northernnarwhal Admittedly a bit jealous.
-
@fyf Fair point, I imagine my music equivalent would probably follow a similar principle.
-
@northernnarwhal I would imagine it would be like judging music separately from lyrics.
-
@fyf To be fair I think clever lyricism is an important part of songwriting, it's probably why I love Andrew Jackson Jihad so much anyway.
-
@northernnarwhal Well to be fair I also think a good story and writing are just as important to a movie as good cinematography
-
@fyf I had liked Fun for that reason, until Emily ruined Some Nights for me by pointing out how every line in it is inferior to Aim and Ignite
-
@fyf Oh for sure, if anything that's what irked me about Guardians of the Galaxy. The cinematography was great but the writing just didn't grip me. Not re-opening this can of worms though, it's just the best example.
-
@northernnarwhal Eh. The comedic writing was pretty on point in my opinion, but other than that I'll admit it was mediocre writing.
-
@fyf I can agree with that
-
@northernnarwhal I could say similar things about It's a Wonderful Life. Excellent cinematography, great micro writing, great acting, but the overall plot and premise was cheesy, a little unbelievably, and slightly tedious.
-
@fyf Yeah, It's a Wonderful Life can be pretty much summed with "Christmas with family is nice"
