            1. @awlditzy It's a metal album, and I use the term loosely here, that came out last year that turned a lot of heads and received pretty unanimous praise. It uses black metal as a base but adds in many other elements of genres like post-rock, shoegazing, punk, and others into the mix, and it all fits together really nicely in one of the most creative and expressive albums I've heard in years. The music itself teeters between chaos and tranquility with finesse and grace, and though the screamed vocals might turn some off the guitar play is nothing short of beautiful.

                  1. @northernnarwhal I tried but I can't stand the yelling, sorry. Too bad. The instrumental is awesome though.

                    1. @coutz As I said in my post before, the vocals will turn you off if you're not familiar with the style. I think they're very necessary to the sound though, because they help create the dichotomy between beauty and abrasion in the music itself. The lyrics are fabulous too, especially the lines at the end:

                      "I'm dying."
                      - "Is it blissful?"
                      "It's like a dream."
                      - "I want to dream."

                      1. @northernnarwhal I really can't enjoy this type of singing. I understand the purpose but it annoys me too much to like the music. It's the same as I not liking spicy food: I just don't like it.

                        1. @coutz It's an acquired taste, if you're not used to it that style of music it will be like jumping off the proverbial deep end. But it's sort of one of those things you grow to appreciate when you start listening to more and more music, because it's so important to the sound itself and how the music makes you feel.

                          1. @northernnarwhal I really tried because I really like Metal music. But I just can't stand it. Some yelling here and there is fine but the whole song is too much for my pleb ears :/

                            1. @coutz I think if the song (and album, for that matter) had singing instead of its current vocal styling it would actually lose a lot of its atmosphere, but I can understand how its sound might alienate potential listeners. Not like you really get into a genre like metal (and I use to the term loosely around Deafheaven) to become popular anyway.

                              1. @northernnarwhal Yeah. I just don't like it, I won't even argue abouts reasons, the song is amazing but just not within my tastes.

Thursday, 02-Oct-14 04:18:08 UTC from web
                                1. @coutz It's certainly not for everyone, but I guess as someone who's used to hearing the same old over and over again and knows the ropes of so many genres this album was a sort of breath of fresh air, for me anyway.

                                    1. @coutz Yeah, and I guess since I'm used to extreme music I was able to dive right in. This isn't to say a group has to be unique or groundbreaking for me to enjoy them, but I'm always excited about experimentation.

                        1. @awlditzy It sort of harkens back to the whole discussion on ugliness in art. This, to me, is unfiltered and pure expression. It's so incredibly raw and and expresses an entire spectrum of emotion.

Thursday, 02-Oct-14 04:12:25 UTC from web
                          1. @northernnarwhal I do kind of like that in art but I'm likely more a fan of subtlety... difficult to say really.

Thursday, 02-Oct-14 04:14:42 UTC from web
                            1. @awlditzy Well, the screaming isn't exactly subtle but their blend of genres is both subverse and progressive, it's turned a lot of heads in the music world and gained a lot of positive press even from non-metal listeners.

Thursday, 02-Oct-14 04:16:35 UTC from web
                              1. @northernnarwhal Screaming didn't bother me, in fact gave larger amount of the contrast, which I guess tells as to how not subtle it is. My experience in it was that it was strange but sure where it was going. Another one of those things I suppose I need mood for.

Thursday, 02-Oct-14 04:18:51 UTC from web
                                1. @awlditzy Well, as I mentioned earlier they use black metal music as a base and that vocal style is pretty idiosyncratic with that genre, but the guitar work resembles something more shoe-gazey. It's an odd blend but it somehow works, I always kind of envisioned a sense of desperation in the vocals.

Thursday, 02-Oct-14 04:23:23 UTC from web
                                  1. @northernnarwhal Well, you certainly know how to depict your interpretations :D I suppose I could see a sense of desperation in the vocals, more given what they are saying?

Thursday, 02-Oct-14 04:25:22 UTC from web
                                    1. @awlditzy Throughout the album there are a lot of recurring themes of isolation and distancing oneself from their surroundings, but the album itself (specifically its title and art) were inspired when the lead singer saw a person lying in the sun without a care in the world, completely content. He thought this was really beautiful and let it work its way into the band's music.

                                      1. @northernnarwhal The way a person can see another's action or inaction is truly a magnificent thing.

Thursday, 02-Oct-14 04:31:29 UTC from web
                                        1. @awlditzy Actually, the shade of pink on the cover is intended to represent the colour on the back of your eyelids when you close your eyes and lay in the sun.
