@yodelerty wanna stop you from dying, also talking about FFVI

@northernnarwhal bad, also never played

@yodelerty It's definitely my favourite game in the franchise. Rich, detailed story with engaged and varied characters (most of whom don't come off as forced either), as well as a strong visual design and soundtrack. The core gameplay isn't really a far cry from what you'd expect from an old school Final Fantasy game, so ultimately even though I've level a lot of praise at those factors above your enjoyment of the game will largely be derived from your patience with the JRPG game structure and model (which is handled well by FFVI, but nonetheless contains tropes that will turn off a lot of players not used to or invested in the genre).

@northernnarwhal *leveled

@northernnarwhal i'm not really a fan of jrpgs but sounds okay
-
@yodelerty JRPGs are really hit and miss for me. I feel the genre has a lot of saturation of overdone archetypes, so there are a lot of JRPGs I can't get into at all but the ones I have enjoyed in the past I generally hold in really high regard.

@northernnarwhal that's good, always nice to have faves

@yodelerty EarthBound in particular is not only one of my favourites in the genre but also one of my favourite games of all time in general, though it's hardly a conventional game in the genre (which is likely part of why I'm so fond of it)
-
@northernnarwhal i've been meaning to play that

@yodelerty Actually the whole Mother series in general is pretty great, I just have a particular affinity for EarthBound as it was the first game in the series I played. The series as a whole has methods of storytelling, characters, humour, design, and scipting (dialogue, not code) that are pretty idiosyncratic. Regardless of how much you enjoy the experience as a whole, it'll definitely stick out among its contemporaries.

@northernnarwhal probably might play dunno
