This episode of Firefly is strange and hilarious
Thursday, 21-May-15 23:43:44 UTC from web-
@tiffany Which one?
-
@northernnarwhal The one where Malcolm suddenly has a wife
-
@tiffany Oh, that's a really fun episode.
-
@northernnarwhal I'm so torn when watching this show, some of it's great and some of it is not so great
-
@tiffany Yeah, I don't think there's even been a Whedon project that I've honestly loved but Firefly is definitely my favourite out of what I've seen by him. It has its highs and lows but it also has strong characters and an innovative aesthetic for Western television; I found it was pretty fun to watch, at least as a show that prioritizes style over substance (which isn't a bad thing, mind you, just that that kind of media needs to be parsed differently than the inverse).
-
@northernnarwhal The style is pretty impeccable for sure. My main beef is with some of the dialogue feeling really unnatural, and also Jayne's entire being
-
@tiffany Yeah, I agree with all of that. I also found that Jayne was a weak character, and Whedon's always been weak with dialogue (at least from what I have seen by him). That being said, I felt Malcolm was a great main character and had the spunk appropriate for the tone of the series. Also Zoe and Wash had a really entertaining relationship dynamic between them throughout the series that was one of its highlights for me.
-
@northernnarwhal Malcolm's pretty good, I'm not in love with him but he's very well balanced
-
@tiffany He's never really well developed in any way, but he works well as an anchor for the rest of the cast which is why I mentioned that he works really well as a main character (in this case, in a frame of reference relative to the narrative of Firefly).
-
@northernnarwhal Huh, I figured he'd at least develop by bonding with the characters, particularly Shepherd and Simon
-
@tiffany Well, you have to keep in mind the show is technically kind of unfinished (which is one of the particular caveats when watching Firefly, but as I mentioned before I usually just engage with it as more of popcorn media anyway)
-
@northernnarwhal Oh yeah, true
-
@tiffany What's next on your list after Firefly, anyway?
-
@northernnarwhal Game of Thrones, probably
-
@tiffany Oh, that'll last you a while.
-
@northernnarwhal Yeah that'll be my summer
-
@northernnarwhal is it real? http://9gag.com/gag/aQ4Wgqe
-
@tiffany Pretty much, yeah. I've been thinking about whether I want to start some massive series over the summer, but I haven't decided yet. I've been flirting with the idea of maybe taking the opportunity to finally give that 2011 Hunter x Hunter adaptation a try, since I've heard nothing but good things about it from everyone I know who's seen it. I've been incredibly apprehensive about starting it since it's 148 episodes and two hour and a half films, which is a massive investment, and also because I'm not even sure if it's my kinda show or not. I figure I might try it if I have nothing else to watch, but likely I'll just use the summer to catch up on a bunch of shorter shows I've had in my queue for a while. There isn't anything new that will be airing during the summer season that I'm honestly excited for aside from the second season of Gatchaman Crowds so I figure most of my time will be spent with older shows. Or who knows, I could also just catch up on a bunch of books.
-
@mushi Yes, this is an actual thing in Canada and we do this every winter. It's actually really great, it's like a maple flavoured slushie.
-
@northernnarwhal and a slushie would be...?
-
@mushi a slushie silly
-
@mushi A homegenous mixture of Flavoured syrup and Crushed ice with water.
-
@mushi A slushie is a cold drink where you have crushed ice and some kind of sweet flavouring (usually something fruity) http://i.imgur.com/Hgjd84a.png
-
@northernnarwhal Starting a big series is such an investment that I put it off for weeks or months. God, if I had more time and motivation I'd love to watch The Simpsons all the way through, when or if it finishes.
-
@northernnarwhal oooh, those things, i know these things
-
@tiffany I toy with that idea as well but have enough on the proverbial plate as it is.
-
@mushi im canadian too by the way o.O (from quebec.. i dont really like the rest of the canada for em.. reasons)
-
@awlditzy I'd say same but I'm not sure how true that is. There are so many shows I said I'm gonna watch but I've stopped caring for the most part
-
@shadetheunicorn *Bursts out of your Pants pocket* CAN I HUG YOU AND SAY HI? I have neevr met you!
-
@tiffany I would definitely not be able to do that, I've seen most of the early seasons on DVD and a bunch of assorted episodes that aired on TV but aside from that I haven't really actively watched it, at least not recently. It would be really impressive if you pulled that off though, I surely don't think I'd have the resolve for it!
-
@shadetheunicorn i thought everyone liked canada
-
@tiffany Yeah, I should weed out that sort of stuff from my qeue also. Might save me a good bit of hassle.
-
@shadetheunicorn Oh, I'm Canadian too! (I live in Ontario, but half my family is from Quebec and we speak English and French)
-
@northernnarwhal Well it would take a very long time but I'm sure I could do it. I've seen the best part of the first 12 or so seasons, and assorted episodes after that
-
@awlditzy I should really remake my list
-
@tiffany On a somewhat same note I should actually make a list of books to read, instead of just going to the library and winging it.
-
@mushi There's actually a pretty contentious schism between French Canada and English Canada, with both sides resorting to forming petty caricatures of the other.
-
@northernnarwhal i bet it is french's fault
-
@mushi well i dont it sucks here and its fu**king cold all the time and the worst of all there's almost no brony around here its so lonely..
-
@mushi It's neither's fault, it's simply due to cultural differences, among other things. It is sort of a complex issue, and painting it as the "fault" of either group of people is awfully reductive.
-
@shadetheunicorn well, i'm Br, so nearly anywahere will be too cold for me
-
@mushi br?
-
@northernnarwhal well yeah, i wasnt much serious
-
@shadetheunicorn brazilian
-
@mushi I know, although it really is a loaded topic to discuss in the first place.
-
@tiffany Long series definitely really drain me out. The Simpsons kind of stretches beyond what's conventionally long though, I think if I went through all of it I'd have some kind of existential crisis. Sort of like how I love everything I've read by James Joyce but still haven't picked up Ulysses yet because good grief is it a long book. Summer, maybe? (I say I'll get a lot of things done in the summer and maybe accomplish half of them).
-
@northernnarwhal I'm gonna have school work to do in the summer, but that'll be blown off until the last minute. Also my grandparents are probably coming over from America so that'll be something. I dunno if I'll get much of anything done
-
@tiffany I'll be graduated by summer so by then I won't have to worry about anything school related until September, which will be really nice. I will likely be working for all of the summer though, so that will take up lots of my time. Aside from that I'm planning a camping trip with some friends for the summer so that'll be fun, and I know Dane will hopefully visit sometime during the summer too.
-
@northernnarwhal You're a lucky son of a gun meeting Danerooni
-
@tiffany Not to mention there's also the possibility of Riley coming to Toronto in October. I'm actually really lucky, and I'm very grateful I'm able to meet a lot of my good friends from here. I'd like to hopefully visit someone myself at some point too!
-
@northernnarwhal Riley too? ;----;
-
@tiffany Don't worry he won't ever meet me. Wait.
-
@awlditzy ho don't do it
-
@tiffany self defecate??
-
@awlditzy Well no don't do that
-
@tiffany In and around the Toronto area is just coincidentally really convenient for lots of people from here, so I am pretty damn lucky. Plus as you know I got to hang out with Coltz back in 2014, which is great since he'll be heading back to Brazil later in the year so we were able to get together while the opportunity still presented itself.
-
@awlditzy It could happen, you're actually closer to me than most people here.
-
@northernnarwhal You're all coming to my wedding
-
@tiffany That sounds like lots of fun.
-
@tiffany Bofa Wedeez Nuts
-
@northernnarwhal It's come to my attention that there's not really anyone I know in real life who I'd invite to such a shindig, so if I could actually have you nerds there it'd be, y'know, decent
-
@awlditzy Holy matrimoneez nuts
-
@tiffany Mother apple.
-
@tiffany bronies are best nerds
-
@northernnarwhal Maybe if I have a reason to go to Toronto, like a Celica Supra meet seeings how any in this country would take the same distance.
-
@tiffany Even if it's not for something like that I know I've mentioned in the past that I'd like to visit England at some point regardless, so I'll sure at some point we'd meet up were something like that to happen.
-
@northernnarwhal *I'm sure
-
@awlditzy I certainly wouldn't remove the possibility of it occurring in the future.
-
@northernnarwhal Pls come visit me
-
@tiffany At some point I hope I'm able to.
-
@northernnarwhal I'm so lonely
-
@tiffany Aww. Kind of makes me want to start swimming.
-
@awlditzy Michawl Phelps
-
@tiffany Hi so lonely, I'm dad!
-
@northernnarwhal You're not allowed to visit me now
-
@tiffany Vacationzoned again
-
