        @tiffany That being said, I don't think it's a bad film. It's a messy conclusion to the show, but a conclusion nonetheless, which the show desperately needed. I felt a lot of its major themes could have been articulated better, but the core overarching narrative is, for the most part, focused.

        @northernnarwhal It started off well and good, for sure. I hate how Mal took Shepherd's death worse than Zoe took Wash's. I suppose it's meant to reflect her character but it comes off poorly in my opinion. All of Wash's dinosaur figures lined up by his seat at the end was nice though, though that may not have been a direct homage, but still

        @tiffany Yeah, symbolically Wash's death made a lot of sense but in terms of execution it felt really abrupt and cold to me.

        @tiffany Well, that's what I was talking about in terms of execution. Wash's death was reflective of the fact that thematically Serenity is a story entirely about loss, and so his death was meant to articulate that. And it did, and it did drive the characters and narrative, but not in a way that felt entirely impactful for me. I feel like it would've helped if he died earlier in the film so we'd have more time to spend with the characters onscreen coping.

        @tiffany Yeah, as I said before his death made sense to me, I just felt it wasn't articulated incredibly well. Which goes back to what I mentioned earlier about how ultimately the film's themes are on the messy side whereas its core narrative is pretty well focused. Also as I mentioned before, I don't think Serenity is a bad film. I can still enjoy it as a much needed proper conclusion to Firefly, and I thought it handled its characters quite well, at least in terms of their actions and motivations. I do have a lot of strong criticisms for the film, but not enough that I'd say I specifically disliked like it.

        @tiffany That's pretty good. I remember when I did marathon the series I got through it pretty quickly. I think I got through all of it in around a week, including Serenity.

        @tiffany That tends to be the case with a lot of shows for me, minus the weeklong gaps. I haven't watched anything at all lately though as I was really busy all weekend. Friday I had work and then my prom in the evening, and Saturday and Sunday I was at the anime convention.

        @tiffany It was lots of fun. The food was really good and my friends and I danced until we physically could no longer stand. And then we were all exhausted on Saturday the next day when we were standing around all day at the convention. But still, fun times all around.

        @northernnarwhal That's awesome. I loved my prom, and we all did a hell of a lot of dancing as well, then I had to give lots of people sweaty hugs. Then 8 or so hours later I had to go to this crappy school for the day

        @tiffany I'm happy mine was on a Friday, but at the same time I still wasn't able to sleep in on the following Saturday because of the convention. But I still at least got a few hours of sleep, so that's something. I'm still kind of tired because I stayed up later than I thought I would last night, but I'm sure after a few days my sleep cycle should be back on track.

        @northernnarwhal It was very late June. I got my exam results in very late August (which was like a week before I went to my new school, but I didn't know if I'd have the results to get in until that time), and my graduation was in like October.

        @tiffany My exam results will be mailed to me sometime during the summer if I don't go in for the exam review day a few days after my final exams (which I'm not going into because I don't want to spend all day in school just to find out my scores early).         @tiffany I thankfully have never had any unrealized crushes go public, and all the breakups I have been through have been solid and healthy (if at times sort of soul crushing nonetheless). But yeah, I don't like to think of myself as a vindictive person and I've gotten over any bad blood there may have been. I actually went to the con with one of my exes and we had a grand time together.

        @tiffany Yeah, it is sort of a reflection of her character. I personally think it's not that she doesn't care, it's just that throughout the series she's always been the first to put up a tough front, so even when her beloved dies her instinctual response is to not show any kind of superficial weakness. Mal is a lot more attached to everyone to people he cares about (which comes through in a lot of his dialogue and that one big monologue he had later in Serenity), and even though Shepherd wasn't technically part of the crew in the film he had definitely made enough of an impact on Mal to evoke that kind of response from him.

        @northernnarwhal Yeah, I get it. I suppose maybe it wasn't out of character or anything, but his death as a whole felt kind of unnoticed, and also not all that warranted by the story. That's how it felt to me anyway

        @zazie A continuation of the series would've helped it a lot more, especially in terms of constructing a tighter and more cohesive narrative with better articulated themes, but for what it was I thought Serenity at least worked on that level: A 2 hour film conclusion to an unrealized television series.

        @zazie The film did pretty much the exact opposite of fanservice in the sense that it gave the fans exactly what they didn't want. No one wanted Wash to die, but the narrative of Serenity did organically facilitate it. That being said, I'm glad the series at least got some sense of closure, as messy as it was.

        @northernnarwhal I don't have an issue with a show not doing what fans want. Wash dying was fairly well done because, like you said, it was organic. That doesn't change the fact that the entire movie was just wrong.
