  1. I'm surprised more anime studios don't animate their series; it works really well

    • Matt repeated this.
    • @tiffany While are outliers to this comparison, generally the difference between cartoons and anime stems from either having less detailed drawings moving during more frames or more detailed drawings moving during less frames. As far a sthe anime side of things go, there are a lot of shows I've enjoyed where the technical animation isn't all that great but the actual directing and shot composition is pretty stellar.

    • @tiffany Hi there, Tiff from the past. Just thought I'd talk a bit about this.

In Japanese animation, they tend to value strong poses and detailed drawings a bit more than fluid movement. That's not a bad thing, that's just how they do things. I think a lot of stills from a lot of animes (with a few exceptions) could easily be confused as a standalone piece of art. That being said, it's also probably because Japanese animation studios are basically sweatshops and often they're given INSANE deadlines (think South Park except everybody's underpaid and nobody really knows who their boss is.)

    • @mrmattimation On topic, an anime from earlier this year, Shirobako, actually gets its narrative framing around characters in the anime industry and the hardships and compromises they must make as a result to achieve their dreams. It's obviously dramatized to some extent, but it made for a lot of really strong conscious commentary in the writing. Animators in Japan don't make a lot of money aside from the big directors and whatnot, and all of them just do it because it's their passion and it's what they love to do, even if they end up sacrificing any free time as well as sleep.

    • @northernnarwhal Oh, wow, really? I've literally never EVER seen a series with a premise like that. I might check it out.

    • @mrmattimation Yup, all the main characters work in various sectors of the industry (production assistant, key animator, voice actress, etc.) and the show structures its conflict around the struggles the characters must face as a result of their work. It's also just a stunning tale of the triumph of the human spirit and how we cope with the struggles our lives throw at us. It's a great dramedy and I highly recommend it.

    • @northernnarwhal That'll be an interesting watch. The CLOSEST thing I've ever seen to animation being portrayed in media was that one South Park episode where Stan and Kyle make South Park. And also that really bad Disney XD show where the kid is an aspiring animator who doesn't animate anything.

    • @mrmattimation The first episode of "Tiny Toon Adventures" kinda meta-did.

    • @mrmattimation Shirobako isn't about animation exclusively so much as it's about the anime industry, but that umbrella does include animation. You'll probably like it.
