golly gee my family sure now how to make me not kill myself
Sunday, 29-Nov-15 17:15:45 UTC from web-
@tiffany How so?
-
@taknamay they really like talking to me like I'm a disappointment, which I probably am, and brushing me off as "just being a teenager" despite also being fully aware that I'm very depressed and having even expressed concerns that I might kill myself
-
@tiffany Glad I asked; I didn't catch the sarcasm. Why do you think you are a disappointment?
-
@tiffany I have struggled through depression too, so if you want to talk about it I am here to listen.
-
@taknamay well I'm 17 and I've never had a real job, nor do I really do anything with my life which (to them) serves as a worthwhile hobby. also I overheard my grandparents talking about how disappointed they are with me so there's THAT
-
@tiffany Don't rely on your family. That's usually a bad idea. Very few families are what they're made out to be.
-
@skellythos for the time being I kind of have to, but once I'm gone I am gone
-
@tiffany Do you want to go to college after high school? Not having a job at 17 doesn't sound that crazy to me.
-
@taknamay well I'm taking a gap year first to decide what I'd wanna do at university and whatnot, so ideally yeah. as for the job thing I guess it's just something that's been asked of me by my grandparents since I was like 13, so that might just be a generational thing I guess
-
@tiffany Oh, I meant emotionally. Your economical situation is normal for your age. You shouldn't have a full time job before 18. One you graduate you can start looking for something, save up, and move away.
-
@tiffany For the record: I am 18 years old, have never been employed ever, don't know how to do taxes, don't have a bank account, will likely not move out until I'm finished with college - if I even go to college, I haven't even applied anywhere yet and have NO idea how I would pay for it - and every cent that I've ever earned has been from doing favors, chores, or selling my art.
-
@skellythos yeah, you're right. I try not to really react to them emotionally but it can be tough
-
@tiffany If they were asking you to work at 13, they're slave drivers. I don't know about there, but over here people can go to jail for doing that.
-
@skellythos I think at that point it was more of a summer job sorta thing, I don't remember
-
@mrmattimation I guess I'm not too behind in that department then
-
@tiffany Don't worry: they might be calling you a disappointment now, but once you find something in a few years they'll happily change their tune to be about how they were with you every step of the way and you wouldn't be where you are without their su- wait
-
@redenchilada sounds astute
-
@redenchilada @tiffany Exactly what Red said. Remember how things are now, and when they ask for something remind them of it. They'll try to make you feel bad about it and tell you you're horrible, but you have t be able to ignore it.
-
@skellythos @Tiffany Glad this talk was had... Worried about the same thing.
-
@metaltao at least we have each other
-
@Tiffany Hell yeah!
