  1. So, replaced a wheel bearing and brakes on a friend's car outside today. Turns out I actually do miss car work, just the easier stuff, as in not an engine transplant.

    1. @awlelwa That's the thing about hobbies. They're enjoyable until you're forced to deal with difficult and slow parts of it that you don't want to. Yu start hating them until you stop altogether for a while and then pick up something simpler and nicer again.

      1. @skellythos Guess I'm still not keen on calling it a hobby.

        1. @awlelwa I classify jobs you enjoy and relax you as remunerated hobbies.

      2. @skellythos That's what separates hobbies and careers for me. Hobbies are the things you're things you're interested in, either casually or intensely, but careers are the things you're able to dedicate yourself to and still enjoy while not needing as much down time.

        1. @northernnarwhal If you can dedicate it an immense amount of time and derive joy from it, I'd classify it as a vocation.

          1. @skellythos Me too, though I find career and vocation overlap in a lot of areas

            1. @northernnarwhal I never considered enjoyment a requirement for something to classify as a career. Always defined it as a work field you prepare yourself for extensively and work in for years.

              1. @skellythos See I always figured that the dedication required to pursue careers was an offshoot of enjoyment, so I've generally lumped the two together.

                1. @northernnarwhal Well, sometimes that dedication can come from a different source, like for example knowing the career will ensure lots of high-paying jobs. You don't enjoy the career itself, but you do it for a reward.

                  1. @skellythos I guess there's kind of a give and take to these sorts of things, though I think what you're saying can be just as much applied to vocations as it can be applied to careers, if not even more so.

                    1. @northernnarwhal I don't consider it a vocation if you don't love doing it.

                      1. @skellythos I think at this point it's just a matter of mere semantics

                        1. @northernnarwhal That's what I thought the conversation was about from the beginning.

                          1. @skellythos Well, I think there's a undercurrent of objectivity in semiotic linguistics that's encapsulated by subjective semantics, but at this point the overlapping of discourse has run its course so there's only room for said semantics.

                            1. @northernnarwhal I try to discern the exact meaning of each word because otherwise everything ends up meaning the same. I like having a word for each thing with clear differences.

                              1. @skellythos I think I have specific language I use in specific contexts or to convey certain emotions or ideas, but I think there's definitely an overlap with synonymous and similar terms (like I don't concretely separate terms like "big" and "large" and generally will just default to one situationally)
