@mono I do hope you eventually build an imageboard. Your imageboard admin philosophy is sound and it would be great

@moonman are you FrankerZposting?
or are you being serious. not being a jerk i can answer seriously if you'd like-
@rw Im serious.

@moonman
I used photoshop for this one, it has an animation tool now that makes it a lot faster. I sometimes will use After Effects if i have to get fancy. There's a lot of free ones out there to use too. For sprites I use pencil on mac, or there are some free sites you can use. Blender will work, GIMP I have trouble with.
Paint works if you want to make a traditional animation by saving frames and mashing them together on a site somewhere-
@rw when I'm not having output issues, I want to get a monthly subscription to Adobe tools for a while to try aftereffects.
-
@moonman https://batcaveposter.club/attachment/59806
After Effects is heavy on system and I rarely use it for simple layer based frame animations. But it's what I use if I have to do something complicated -
@moonman Also the subscription model from adobe is bullkiwi and I wish I didn't have to support them to use it. Sell me your overpriced software as a package like you used to, this cloud based sub model is a pain in the ass for everything
-
@rw I still have CS4 on a dvd somewhere
Friday, 29-Apr-16 20:18:51 UTC from web-
@nerthos I do too, but they actually do make decent upgrades to make the software better with new versions while simultaneously making old and new versions more and more incompatible.
-
@rw Personally, I'd rather still be using a hand-spun drill than an electric one if the electric one required me to pay a monthly subscription.

@rw @nerthos I have the original CS and also a CC subscription. I literally could not tell you what the functional differences are.
-
@maiyannah @nerthos I live in Adobe world most of my day. A lot of it is subtle improvements to tools like quick selection, spot heal, etc. Most of it just expedites tasks and flows more accurately.
-
@rw I just have an everlasting hate for anything that requires subscriptions. I consider it unethical, and would rather pay a lot for something than rent it.

@rw @nerthos I actually find CC clunkier. It takes more RAM for the same stuff, takes a papayaing millenia to load since its calling home to mommy Adobe to make sure it's allowed to come out and play, and every now and a gain hard BSODs my computer. I mostly just keep the sub so they can't say kiwi about my using CS cause I long since lost the receipt to it.
-
@rw @nerthos @maiyannah I am a freetard but in a previous life I did print work and there's just no comparison to Adobe suite. Unless you go back so far that tools like Pagemaker was still Aldus.
-
@moonman I don't argue the quality of the software, just the concept of the service.

@moonman @rw @nerthos All of my past printsetting experience was on Corel products back when they were still a contender.
-
@maiyannah @rw @nerthos tried it, too much hassle dealing with print houses that would only take adobe or Pagemaker formats, had issues with proprietary colorspaces. Admittedly the former is network effect and not quality. The quality of interoperability for Adobe was a lot better too, eg illustrator and ps.
-
@moonman @rw @nerthos Corel was at a time pretty much the best, but support was kiwi. It was the only one that actually proper broke down Pantone colour maps properly at the time. You'd always end up with something off with Adobe, since it's since gotten better.
-
@maiyannah Oh right I remember that one. I have a CD of that too.

@moonman this reminds me of that time when I had to make a roll-up, did it in inkscape + scribus, asked the print house what colour profile they use and they were like "wat is color profile" @rw @maiyannah @nerthos

@moonman @nerthos @maiyannah This is my issue. I can not do what I need to with the available free software tools. Formats are incompatible, it takes me two to three times the amount of time for simple tasks, I've got like 15 years of experience using Adobe batcave. I've tried inkscape, i've tried gimp, i've tried all of it in order to replace my reliance on adobe. The biggest issue I have is these tools are not intuitive. I'd gladly help a developer write something that makes sense by providing some sort of designer insight, but most of the shortcuts, the functionality and etc seem like they require much more of an effort to just do a simple task.
Blender is probably the best free software tool alternative around. I don't have many complaints about it.
I hate subscription based models as well. I find it unethical, but my livelihood depends on Adobe's software.-
-
@maiyannah @moonman @nerthos I've used it and I like it for painting, but a majority of my work isn't illustration.
I make a lot of "memes" "image macros" and stupid bullkiwi for the internet and communities I'm in. All of that would stop if I gave photoshop up as well. I can afford to spend the time to create stupid content because I can do it so quickly. I had to use GIMP for work for a week while I had no subscription and it was hard. I could spend the time to learn it properly and tried to, but even then it's still not intuitive.-

@maiyannah @moonman @rw @nerthos 12000 hours in MS Paint. https://community.highlandarrow.com/attachment/23968

@rw Gotta say I love your drawing style
Friday, 29-Apr-16 20:48:08 UTC from web-
@nerthos Thanks! It's a style I perfected by being lazy ;-;
You're building me up today haha, I appreciate it!-
@rw Haha, no problem. I just found out about you today so yeah. I guess I just like lazy or simple drawings.

@rw @nerthos @maiyannah it is impossible to explain to Linux users just how mind blowingly unintuitive gimp is. And it is a LOT better than it used to be.
-
@moonman @rw @nerthos Oh god I hate people who try to tell me the GIMPs interface is fine, it feels like it was designed for the multi-angled ones who can only be expressed in our dimension with a mathematical equation
-
@maiyannah then who is cinellerra for (more seriously, gimp is fine if you're used to monte carlo debugging - a.k.a. pressing random buttons until grape works; humans tend to be afraid of pressing random buttons and give up easily) @moonman @rw @nerthos
-
@maiyannah https://community.highlandarrow.com/attachment/23976 and there's me still using stuff like this when I don't need to be using photoshop because I rather like having more space to see what I'm buggering about with.
-
-
@moonman I tried it in like 2008 once and never touched it again. Nowadays I mostly use paint.net or MSpaint but that's because I don't need to do anything more complicated that some graphical joke now and then.

@moonman @maiyannah @nerthos @rw i use gimp once in a while when i need to do something quick and disposable
but never for any actual long-term projects-
@hakui @rw @nerthos @maiyannah all gimp usability arguments converge when one guy shows up and says he owns a graphic design company and uses all free software until you look up his Web site and all his work is laughable dog apple.

@moonman @maiyannah @nerthos @rw are they at least better than http://www.27bslash6.com/brochure.html
