Had to turn off data for my phone since we hit the data cap (I'm on a 1 GB plan shared between 4 other family members).

@normandy I had unlimited grandfathered in on Verizon, I was running my entire Internet in my apartment off an original GNex lol. Then a family member messed with the plan and I lost it.

@normandy @moonman Most of the mobile labels are owned by Bell and Rogers, offering only the illusion of choice. One of the things the conservatives were doing that I liked was they tabled legislation which would make them have to clearly disclose the parent company of such a subsidiary so they can't mislead people, but that act died when Trudeau got in.

@takebananaakenji Pretty much. Wireless is for trivial activities like watching a video on your phone while in bed, not for doing anything important

@takekiwiakenji @moonman @nerthos Eh, it makes a good failover in rural areas. It's what we use here for half the winter when the ice takes out half of the non-buried cables they insist on not putting underground. I'd rather spotty 10 MB/s than 0 MB/s

@maiyannah My issue with wireless is not so much speed as it is reliability, as wireless tends to die often unless you're close to the router, at which point you might as well use a wire

@takeFrankerZakenji @moonman @nerthos Our community has a series of wireless spots and repeaters we set up as a group that share a password, so as long as one of us has internet we all do.

@nerthos That's a consumer-electronics-are-kiwi problem than something inherent to wireless though. I have a business class wireless router at home and get signal at the Burger King a 30 min walk away.

@maiyannah Yeah, but the point is it's impractical to buy bussiness grade hardware for home use due to cost, and when it comes to readily available affordable routers, it's much better to just use a lan cable from the router to the computer.

@nerthos The speed tends to be relatively crap compared to wireless internet because you're resending dropped packets but I get about 10 MB/s ish out of it fine as long as I'm in range, which is more than fine for most purposes.

@nerthos You can get them second-hand for really cheap, like most things, if you know where to look. The National Capital Freenet here often sells hardware they're donated and don't use themselves for a freaking steal.

@maiyannah I said readily available. Sometimes you find something good, but often all the stores stock crap.

@nerthos All about knowing where to look, at least here. I couldn't speak for the markets elsewhere except back home in Scotland.

@maiyannah I can often find decent stuff at mercadolibre but as I said, I do all important things from wired internet and just use wireless for trivial things, so I don't need more.

@nerthos It has it's place. I wouldn't use it as a daily thing, but especially since the telcos are idiots and don't bury cables, it makes for a good failover in my community.

@maiyannah Here almost all wires are aerial but the weather allows for it. Temperature rarely goes below 0º and there's no tectonic movements, floods or tornados. The only downside of the place is high humidity.

@nerthos The ice here during winter will always take the net down at least twice for about a day or so, its really quite annoying and why our community developed our little network.

@maiyannah Here it only goes down when a truck hits a post, or in the case of one of my brother's friends, when someone shot the comm box.

@nerthos Yes shooting uplinks is probably a good way to cause outages I imagine.

@maiyannah Talking with him we came to the conclusion it was likely the neighborhood's mafia-like guy making an excuse to get coverage from a local ISP cooperative that had better service than Telecom.
