When even the paid out media shill critics are saying Rogue One isn't great, it's a sign its probably pretty lacklustre.
-
"Doesn't break the mold in terms of franchise formula, and it's an enjoyable installment in the "Star Wars" canon. However, it's not much more than that.
"If you're not a fan, Rogue One may not be the revelation that The Force Awakens turned out to be.
"It offers more details of interoffice politics among the squabbling factions of both the Empire and the Rebel Alliance than probably anyone but a mid-level manager cares for.
Those are the POSITIVE critic reviews.-
That's the height of the critic opinion, even the ones on outlets basically owned by Disney.
It only goes downhill from there. -
@maiyannah Well after what they did with marvel, it's no surprise they'd do the same to Star Wars.

@nerthos The Force Awakens was entirely insubstantial. The original sequels, and even the prequel trilogy, had a sense of a deeper world at play. TFA doesn't, at all. Everything exists in service to the character drama of the woman so memorable I don't remember her name. Sounds from critic reviews Rogue One is much the same.

@maiyannah I didn't really mind that about TFA as I went in expecting a live action episode of Clone Wars, most of my issues with it were regarding how little sense many plot points made. It was fun for the action but it really lacked good characters since the new ones were kinda boring or obvious pandering, the old ones that showed up I never liked in the first place, and in general the whole thing looked like it was written by fans.

@nerthos Don't expect good character action out of any of these movies, because all they are is pandering.
-
@maiyannah I don't, I watch them for the pew pew boom scenes. Wish they'd at least keep up with the ep 1-3 highly practiced lightsaber fights though. They screwed up big time in that regard with every character even the ones that are supposed to know how to do it just mindlessly bashing eachother.

@nerthos Honestly even the ones done by actors who had no training at all in the original series were better than TFA's melee fight scenes. It was extremely poorly choreographed, and the lightsabers suddenly got a lot less lethal to make up for that fact to try to give it a sense of danger, which actually ended up robbing it of said.
-
@maiyannah Basically. It went from "you're hit you're dead" to "you're hit you get -5hp and the burn status"

@nerthos Yeah, Obi-Wan in the original first movie just casually lops some FrankerZ gangbanger's arm off. Rey gets a more direct hit and basically just burns and a mild, non-disfiguring wound.
-
@maiyannah Or the whole obi vs anakin thing. Obi wan awkwardly shakes his lightsaber and there goes two legs and an arm. But I guess the characters on the newer movie are just made of a different materials, and with a diet rich in mandalorian iron.

@maiyannah @nerthos
Yeah, I felt like it left much to be desired. I mean, it still felt like a star wars type of movie... but that might just be nostalgia for the old characters and action formula. But I didn't particularly like the new characters, although the pilot guy who didn't get much development seemed like he'd be fun. Although the movie seemed to revolve around the main female character, along with most interactions between each character involved. Only the Luke arc didn't seem to revolve around her. But I bet he will in the next.
