So I just dedicated a whole SD card to ReadyBoost... I think? I dunno. It doesn't seem to have done much.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:39:40 UTC from web-
@zeldatra ReadyBoost really isn't that useful unless you have a system with very little memory to start with. You can't really make memory that isn't RAM useful at all.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:40:29 UTC from web-
@flamingpandaomg I've only got 3GB of actual RAM, so it should have done SOMETHING, right?
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:41:03 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Not really. When I say very little memory, I mean like 512MB of RAM trying to run Vista or Windows 7. It's meant to be a last ditch effort.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:41:41 UTC from web-
@flamingpandaomg Oh. OH WELL. F*** this computer, trying to save up for an iMac anyhow.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:42:13 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Well if it's going to take a while to save up I'd say it'd be a worthwhile investment to buy some actual RAM. It's not all that expensive considering what you're getting out of it.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:43:12 UTC from web-
@flamingpandaomg I've been told to do that before, and I'm not going to, because I hate this laptop and need a new one.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:43:43 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Oh, it's a laptop? .-. you can still swap memory out but desktop is a lot easier to deal with in that respect. I'd say buy a desktop unless you absolutely need mobility, honestly.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:44:50 UTC from web-
@flamingpandaomg I'm buying an iMac or Mac Mini. Which sort of fits in both departments. I get a lot of flak for that decision because you can't do much to upgrade short of more RAM.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:48:05 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Yeah. I have a bias against Apple but really they're not bad. There's a reason why they're the preferred systems for video and audio editing along with graphic design. I just heavily prefer Windows.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:49:53 UTC from web-
@flamingpandaomg Every Mac I've seen has run smoothly since it's been bought. My friend has two iMacs and a Macbook Pro, one of the iMacs was bought in 2011 and the other was bought in 2006, whilst the friend I work on My Little Brony with uses an iMac from a few years back. All of them get by just fine. *shrug* As an animator, I've been told to go for an iMac, and every time I've used OSX it's been a wonderful experience.

@zeldatra Upgrade the RAM and stick a faster Hard Disk in there. I've been using this Macbook Pro since 2009.

@flamingpandaomg @zeldatra That's not strictly true. The solid state memory used in an SD card is preferable for swap space to a slower spinning disk. The card would need to be large enough to hold your entire pagefile to actually be useful.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:42:23 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark He didn't really mention the side of the SD card, that's why I said ReadyBoost wouldn't do that much.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:43:39 UTC from web-
@flamingpandaomg I used a high speed 4gb SD card to make a 2gb of soldered RAM netbook run Windows 7 reasonably well.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:44:59 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark It can work, but I definitely wouldn't use it over more RAM if I had a choice
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:45:34 UTC from web-
@flamingpandaomg A faster hard disk is also always a worthwhile upgrade, depending on what the specific issue is. I see a shocking number of machines with 5K RPM disks in them, which is just horrible.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:46:34 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark Personally I'd love to buy a SSD and install my OS on that. It'd be a dream come true.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:47:04 UTC from web-
@flamingpandaomg I use a Hybrid Drive. They're both more affordable AND more spacious than SSD's, and provide roughly 75% of the benefits.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:47:53 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark Well it doesn't matter affordability wise because I'm dead broke. XD I'd love either, honestly.

@vt3c I've been told that modern OSX uses much less RAM than Windows 7 does.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:55:56 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Or, at least, its programs are optimized better anyway.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:56:16 UTC from web -
@zeldatra 7 wastes ridiculous amounts of ra,

RAM that isn't being used is literally completely wasted. Claiming an OS that /uses RAM/ is wasting it is absolutely ASININE
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 19:57:51 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark You do have a point there

@vt3c RAM usage under UNIX favours caching frequently accessed data in RAM and only evicting it when the memory is actively required. You need to run the terminal command "free" to see how much RAM is being actually used and how much is just cache.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:00:23 UTC from web -
@vt3c The one I'm looking at has a Nvidia GT 640, 8GB of RAM, a Sandy Bridge i5 quad, and 1TB of (somewhat slow) Hard Disk space. I've been told the 640 isn't an amazing card, but I don't plan on any hardcore 3D rendering, mostly just light to moderate. 3D is fun but I wouldn't want to make whole cartoons in 3D.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:01:31 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Given that 3GB of RAM, and an AMD Athlon Dual-Core with integrated graphics can handle Flash 8 nearly flawlessly, IMAGINE what something like that could do. I could probably move up to one of the Creative Suites.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:03:05 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Not probably. Definitely.

@vt3c Did you seriously just suggest a CPU is better for rendering than a graphics card.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:06:04 UTC from web -
@vt3c Oh god, Apple Displays are so god damn expensive. If I'm gonna get a mini I'll just get an HDMI monitor from like Samsung or LG or something and then use my old CRT as a second monitor. But like I said, I'm leaning more toward saving up another $600 to get the iMac since the Mini only has 4GB of RAM and Intel HD 4000 for graphics. ALTHOUGH given the upgrades that was made to the Air recently, I think the Mini will probably be bumped up to a 5000 or something soon enough, so there's that.

@zeldatra How important even IS color fidelity to what you want to do?
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:08:50 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark Not massively important. The LED on my laptop works just fine, which is pretty much just an older version of this. http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-G4-2029WM-A6-4400M-Dual-Core/dp/B00ADUHJP6/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1373832632&sr=1-2&keywords=HP+Pavilion+g4
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:10:52 UTC from web-
@zeldatra So you don't really need a super-high end monitor overall then. Just one with a decent picture quality and response time. I spent £800 on a monitor for my boss because she does a lot of print work and needs color calibration, but otherwise they're just overkill
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:14:15 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark Right. I mean, the more colors the better, but I'm not about to spend $1000 on just a monitor. That's insane.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:17:28 UTC from web-
@zeldatra In our case we'd just wasted more than that on a print-run of leaflets that came out in the wrong colors, so the monitor was a bit of a no-brainer
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:18:24 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark That's different. Colors are pretty much essential for your job. I, on the other hand, spend all of 10 minutes coloring things and am more concerned about the actual processing power of the machine than the monitor I use.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:21:03 UTC from web-
@zeldatra And the OS.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:21:12 UTC from web -
@zeldatra Clearly the solution is to buy 3 Mac Pros and cluster them
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:22:16 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark I'm not patient enough to save up for a Mac Pro. I mean, I COULD, but my patience is very low as it is.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:23:26 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Scoot plans to try and get a Macbook pro for University, where he will study animation. 13 inch non retina ver.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:29:27 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark I like the Macbook and all, but mobility isn't really a dealbreaker, and I could get an iMac with double the power for only $100 more.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:31:45 UTC from web-
@zeldatra I was just letting you know what other people in a similar position are considering.
Sunday, 14-Jul-13 20:36:04 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark I know. I was just stating my reasons for not getting another laptop.
