GNU\/Linux is the operating system, Linux is the kernel, both are despencable, the naming controversy exists I think mainly because Linux is one big project and program and it unpins everything but GNU is a collection of programs (a very critial and necassary and awesome collection but still just a collection) so people gravitate to thinking linux is more important but this is proven not to be the case since the Debian project and even the Arch Linux project have made versions of their distros not based on Linux (they're based on Hurd and kfreebsd, completely different kernels) but they keep the GNU userland because they prettymuch neeeeeeed it (soz I splurged info again)"}
