It does promote unrealistic expectations and an unhealthy controlling stalker-ish relationship up until Bella becomes a vampire herself. In the Edward's, the protagonist, defense, though, Bella was really accident prone, and Meyer does a good job of showing how she'd basically be dead many times over if it weren't for Edward's compulsion to protect her."}
