When the barrel is shorter than 16 inches, you have to obtain approval from a police chief (or set up a trust) so you can register the gun (and pay a $200 tax stamp) with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE).  The approval process is long, and it can take around a year for the approval to be granted."}
