Modernizing to expand your audience tends to have a high rate of alienating it. It is a game that many people may not know about and as such, expect it to be different in terms of character for games such as this. Changing that you go away from such expectations and get a more critical response from the old and new alike. Most people when looking for a game tend to not look for the same archetypes everywhere they find in many other games.
