On the other hand I really don't want to say get a kitten anyway because if it doesn't work out it results in a lot of problems and a poor homeless animal. Speaking as someone with little experience of pets first hand I can't really consider the emotions at work here, at least not personally. But it might be best to leave it for a while. how recently did she lose her dog? It might help to let that die down first if it is still recent
