Because of checks and balances the negative effects of corruption are minimized.  We're still susceptible to factions and our judicial branch has overstepped its boundaries, but the government that the U.S. founding fathers instituted has worked better than any other system in history considering the circumstances (albeit it's far from perfect). I hope you'll forgive me for not being able to explain very well.. I'm not really into politics.</html>
