It's not the game itself, but the format for the gameplay for that one in particular.  The story mode play actually TOLD a story from several points of view, proceeding through each character's motivations and progression.  Soul Calibur 1-whatever have eschued that idea to just deliver straight up fighting, with little to no story, and cutscenes that make no sense.</html>
