Did a quick test last night, and found it worked for me, and doing that to post to a group I didn't belong to just didn't add it to the group timeline, and didn't turn the tag into a link to the group. The message itself still showed up on my own timeline, though, so not sure why yours are just getting completely lost. :( Afraid we'll have to hope that someone more competent at this stuff than me -- granted, that's a pretty low bar -- has some input, because it sounds like you're doing things right, but ... Anyway, I hope someone figures it out! :)</html>
