I had only ever played Red/Blue, but when X/Y was announced I thought I'd give the rest of the series a go. I got really into it and now I'm super hype for XY. The only ones I haven't played now are Black/White and their sequels. I suggest you try out gen 3 and/or gen 4 before deciding if you want the new one. Luckliy there is VBA and DS emulators for that.
