If nothing changed for years, people would tire of the predictability and lose interest. If it did change, it would depend partially on the tastes of the viewers of the time and partially on the direction they take it. I don't believe it'll ever go in a direction that's implicitly worse so much as become a flavor that some people who used to like won't like it anymore, and new viewers will enjoy as much as some lost viewers used to.
