Both the bass and cello are played in the bass clef, her cutie mark is a treble clef, and when Pinkie grabs Octavia's bow and goes nutty on her instrument, it's waaaaaaaay out of the register of what a bass, or a cello can play. It's evident the animators didn't know dick about music, and just arbitrarily drew her with a large stringed instrument, not intending it to be either or.
