I finished reading the Star Wars Droids omnibus from Dark Horse. It was a goofy 430-page long collection that was spawned in the mid-90's. One story involved a drug plant that made every person who consumed it permanently mindlessly happy. All consumers were called "Smilers". The last remaining one, who happened to be the inventor of the plant, was torn between a dictator and a rebellious faction. The dictator wanted to extract the secrets of the production of the plant from the brain of the last Smiler. There was an alien who wanted to keep the Smiler for himself (as a pet or so) and the alien had the last remaining drug plants. The alien wanted to get rid of war and suffering by producing vast amounts of this drug. The plants were destroyed but with the last remaining bits both the dictator and the rebel leader were given the drug and ended the conflict, but this was heavily implied and never shown on-panel.
