@awl ok, just wondering since Mastodon has some issues getting my posts.
-
@awl Guess you'll have to go outside.
-
@awl Those questions will eat you ALIVE if you let them.
-
@awl Too bad you can't go both like you can with a more recent steel cyclocross bike.
-
@awl I also got 2" wide studded tires after I went down on black ice and tore some cartilage in my rib cage. Haven't used them beyond bedding in the studs.
-
@awl You might consider a "plus" bike, which are between classic mountain bikes and fatbikes. 2" wide tires still dig into snow, but 3" wide tires don't as much. Fatbikes with their 4-5" wide tires are used in places that get lots of snow, as well as sandy areas.

@awl There's a group of riders out here who regularly goes on fire and logging roads with 42-60mm smooth tires, but I've found that only works well when the roads aren't really steep or covered in snow. I do get wheelslip on steep grades on saturated hardpack with smooth tires, but I've learned to just keep pedaling to continue up.

@awl It would, except in order to get out there, I have to do a lot of paved road riding anyway. I did get semi-knobby tires after this: http://u.daggsy.com/12p http://u.daggsy.com/12q
I have a road bike designed for 26" tires that can handle 2.2" knobby tires with fenders (larger without), but I haven't taken it out into conditions like that yet. The bike pictured there is a mountain bike with drop bars, but I didn't have any knobby tires at that point. -
@awl Hiking does sound fun, but I haven't done very much of it.
-
@awl I wish I had a bicycle touring partner out here.
-
@awl Despite what I said about preferring the desert over the temperate rainforest here, I still long for journeying through the mountains. There's too much snow up there right now, though.
-
@awl Maybe spiritual is a better word. It makes it seem like there's more to the world than today's global society recognizes.
-
@awl There's something whimsical about winching one's way up a strip of pavement with trees, rocks, and snow towering all around.

@awl I think you might like these albums: http://u.daggsy.com/12c
Many of them feature mountain passes, but day 3 might be the one you like the best. -
@awl lord I'm trying
-
@awl That one.
-
@awl lock him up
-
@awl I imagine the pirates were very excited to see them, yes ;)
-
@awl AFAIK they get ship time, just not actual sea combat most of the time.
-
@awl I suppose. I actually wonder how well the USMC would perform nowadays in their original role after being in the desert for the last 15 years.

@awl Whenever I get tired out from being on the Fediverse, I go and play some games or watch anime. Sometimes I do homework as well. I know the feel of burnout too, played an MMO almost nonstop for three years a while back.
