Those of you that like touchscreens, I have two questions: 1. Have you ever tried to use one outside in the rain? 2. Do you have touchscreen input on your desktop?
Thursday, 19-Apr-12 10:51:57 UTC from web-
@rotation 1. Yes, and it works fine. 2. No, because desktops aren't designed for touch input.

@redenchilada @rotation Yep, I'd second these answers pretty much word-for-word.
-
@redenchilada Then what will replace the desktop?
Thursday, 19-Apr-12 10:56:08 UTC from web-
@rotation Why assume something will replace the desktop? It's just fine for what it does.
-
@rotation Nothing. A desktop works fine as-is, with no _need_ for replacement. I don't know where you're going with this.

@redenchilada @bitshift "Touch screens are the future" "desktops aren't designed for touch input" Therefore desktops aren't the future.
Thursday, 19-Apr-12 10:58:58 UTC from web-
@rotation Touch screens are the future... of phones. We were talking about phones at the time. Keyboard and mouse is still the way to go for desktops.

@redenchilada Just 'cause something is the future doesn't mean it's good. For instance: The heat death of the universe.

@ceruleanspark Bad analogy. Phone/tablet development is guided by human desires, the inevitable progression of time is not.
-
@bitshift It was supposed to be a ludicrous analogy. Either way, I think the homogenization of cellphone interfaces towards touchscreen only input is not only frequently bad, its boring as hell.
-
@ceruleanspark The homogenization, sure. That still doesn't make a convincing argument for not making any at all; it works very well for me, so I'd prefer that the category continues to exist, but I have no problem with it not being the only category.

@ceruleanspark Hmm... by the time that happens, the human race will probably be extinct. Therefore, surely, there will be no more of our 'good/bad' value judgements. Besides which, I hate it when it gets too warm.

@ceruleanspark Straw man arguments such as those are not conductive to reason.

@rotation Besides, if you want to go that route, Windows 8 _is_ designed for touchscreens.

@rotation The discussion, when he said that, was already on the topic of _mobile devices_, it doesn't seem that unusual to me that he wouldn't see a need to explicitly mention that context when replying.

I dont think touchscreens are the future. Your hand gets in the way of the screen when you "touch" it. You also limit how much input the device can receive because with the current technology you can only touch screen with like 3 inputs right now. a keyboard can have LOTS of buttons.
Thursday, 19-Apr-12 11:03:25 UTC from web-
@jojoax My touch screen takes, like, ten inputs last I checked. You'd have to be a mutant to use more than that.
Thursday, 19-Apr-12 11:04:11 UTC from web -
@jojoax 3 inputs? All of the phones I've used since late 2010 have been able to recognize at least 5, and my current one (Galaxy SII) recognizes at least 10; that was the point where I ran out of fingers to test with, so it's not like it _needs_ more.
-
@bitshift I can think of ways to make 11 inputs
-
@ceruleanspark You charmer!

-
@bitshift @redenchilada ok so i admit i was wrong on the amount of inputs. but i still dont like my hand getting in the way of my screen :P
Thursday, 19-Apr-12 11:06:26 UTC from web-
@jojoax That seems to be more of a design issue. For ~95% of what I do on a smaller device (i.e., a mobile), I don't _need_ to see the area I'm pressing while I'm pressing it.
-
@bitshift You don't game on mobile devices, do you?
-
@ceruleanspark Mobile phones are not built for gaming.

@redenchilada Did you tell Rovio and their castle made of money that? I don't think they heard us all the way down here.

@ceruleanspark Who?

@ceruleanspark Who?
Thursday, 19-Apr-12 11:14:11 UTC from web -
@ceruleanspark Are they the people who make those angry bird things? I never got the appeal of that.
Thursday, 19-Apr-12 11:16:09 UTC from web-
@redenchilada I got bitten by a duck once... does that count?
Thursday, 19-Apr-12 11:16:50 UTC from web -
@redenchilada That's them. The game is actually a fun little artillery puzzler. I am not sure about all the ancilliary crap though
-
-
-
-
@ceruleanspark Not a huge amount, but with 1 exception (which I'll elaborate on), in all the ones I've used it still doesn't present a problem.
-
@ceruleanspark Now, as for that exception: that would be Final Fantasy Crystal Defenders (nice little tower defense game, though the graphics are a little janky), where they solve it a different way: by explicitly having a slight offset between your finger and what it's moving.
-
@bitshift Your current avatar is less cute.
-
@ceruleanspark It's going back to my usual one later today, don't worry. (Also, I did preserve the muzzle, sort of. :P)
