  1. That moment the media player on your Android phone crashes when listening to Experimental Ambient Post-Rock. I should stop flashing these devices, but it's just so much fun! Even for just being able to say "You can't tell me which Android version to use, Samsung. I'll run whatever version I want, for I am root" #

    1. @omni I have a dedicated MP3 player that still manages to crash. It once took me twenty minutes to notice it was looking the same minute and a half of ambience over and over.

              1. @ceruleanspark OH DEAR GOD! Well, as long as it has basic USB transfer support without weird encryption it can't really be worse than an iDevice, can it?

                  1. @ceruleanspark So, let me get this right: instead of being forced to use iTunes you were forced to use WMP or something similar? Ugh, that's awful...

Monday, 30-Apr-12 08:58:46 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                    1. @omni Actually I'm forced to use iTunes, because I have a Mac. In an absolutely baffling move, the zune uses a 3rd party tool to sync through iTunes.

                      1. @ceruleanspark I swear, Microsoft and Apple are in a cartel together, but nobody wants to believe me. Even though it sounds paranoid, I really believe in it >_>

Monday, 30-Apr-12 09:19:20 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                        1. @omni If they're in a cartel, why was the zune such a monumental failure?

Monday, 30-Apr-12 09:19:57 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                          1. @ceruleanspark That argument is even weaker than mine are, and I can't answer that because it seems to be completely unrelated. My bad arguments: they both started to make products that run on each other's platforms and never openly attack each other anymore like they used to (I still remember the "MAC vs PC" FUD campaigns, amongst others)

                            2. @omni The purpose of a cartel is assured profit, and microsoft certainly didn't make any on the zune, was my argument.

                              1. @ceruleanspark Ah, now I get your point, I'm sorry. Well, my arguments are too weak for an actual discussion anyway, so I guess I should drop it

                  1. @toksyuryel I think the media is stored unencrypted, on a drive you can only access with whatever weird drivers you need to access the zune's hidden win CE filesystem.

                  1. @ceruleanspark Mmyep. It's a great dedicated media player; the trouble is, I don't have any need for a dedicated MP3 player when my current phone has enough battery life that I can use it as my media player without worrying about it running down before I'm next somewhere I can charge it.

                      1. @ceruleanspark I do all of those with my phone, except the reading (we have the same family of devices on that point). Seems to work out okay for me, though a good, cheap, high-storage media player would probably make the cut too if I could find one I liked, and can get easily enough.

                              1. @ceruleanspark I carry a courier bag (I _think_ that's the name for the kind of bag it is, anyway), so I can carry pretty much anything I might need. It's only cost/actual-use-I'd-get-out-of-them tradeoffs that're really keeping me from adding more devices to my everyday stuff.

                                  1. @ceruleanspark Oh, which model? I've looked into those, and one of those is definitely a consideration (especially w.r.t. Genesis; there are so many old Genesis games I would love to play on the move).

                                      1. @ceruleanspark Oh, sweet, looks like Amazon has one for £73. That's almost certainly cheaper than getting one of each of the portable devices it emulates, let alone the things it emulates that aren't portable. Might well go ahead and order one, how decent is the emulation compatibility/speed?

                                          1. @ceruleanspark Oh, that looks better, yeah. I mean, I prefer Amazon when I'm buying something and I'm not certain of trustworthiness of other sites, but I'm perfectly willing to take your word about that one being kosher.

I had zero issues with my order though. It even arrived in its original, hilarious, chinese packaging. (Complete with a photo of Master Chief)

                                          2. @ceruleanspark That said, their estimated shipping cost makes the total barely any cheaper, given the amazon one is fulfilled by Amazon, and thus covered by their free shipping thing.

                                        2. @bitshift In some cases, you have to switch out the stock emulator with a better one, but otherwise I've had very few compatibility issues. My biggest issue was that sonic games won't emulate with audio. GB, GBC and GBA work perfectly, and I played a sizable chunk of Chrono Trigger without issue. I've played Gunstar Heroes on it without noticable issue. The one thing that doesn't work is the devices RTC, so games that rely on that (EG: Pokemon Silver) won't work right.

                                          1. @ceruleanspark Ah, that's pretty good, then. Mostly what I want is portable Shadowrun (the Genesis one, which is _obviously_ the best one :P), and I don't believe that pushed any real boundaries of the hardware, so it should be fine. :)

It _does_ need a debit/credit card that can be used for international purchases, but I just made an Amazon.com account with my card (Visa Debit, if that makes a difference) as the payment method, and it all worked fine.
