And I have done away with parsecs in my book! Because calculating a parsec requires using the "astronomical unit," which is (roughly) the distance from Earth to Sol, and using that outside of Sol system seems backwards and anthropocentric.
-
@scribus Weren't you writing a novel?
-
@northernnarwhal Yes. And in today's course of research, I decided that "parsec" is too anthropocentric for my liking.
-
@scribus Ah, gotcha, that makes sense. So it's a sci fi novel?
-
@northernnarwhal Yes. A star-spanning action-adventure! IN SPAAAAACE~
-
@scribus When you become a best seller I'm gonna brag to all my friends that I talked to you on a rainbow horse site
-
@northernnarwhal Groovy.

@scribus Radical.

@scribus You can use other distance units like light seconds or light minutes. But sadly other species might not know how long a second or minute is. Even a meter is basically unknown to them.

@northernnarwhal I gave up telling Americans to adopt the metric system.

@broniebrown Telling Americans to adopt the Metric system is like telling the French to talk English at the EuroSongFestival

@broniebrown We will probably not see any form of extraterrestial intelligent life in our lifetime, let alone be abducted by one and having to explain "stuff"... But in case you one day will be, Mathematics is considdered to be the universal language, better start honing your abilities of drawing squares with dots like the proper cavemen you are.

@critialcloudkicker Mathematics are usually something that can be understood universally if the concepts are abstract enough or explained carefully alongside learning the other person's language and culture. How do you explain 1+1=2 to a person who doesn't know your language and can't associate two lines with the number two. Maybe the person associates the number two with a rectangle whose side ratio is 1:2 or the person knows numbers displayed as different colors. It can get really weird just to think about the ways how you can represent such a simple subject in such diversity.

@broniebrown Easy enough. You start off with circles and rocks and writing down actual numbers. Untill you have established that we are a base 10 civilization. After all, if they have not kidnapped you from earth to learn from you they probably just want to do something else from the get-go anyway

@broniebrown Oh balls, that's right; even a light-year is based on the duration of a year on Earth. :-/
-
@broniebrown Maybe I'll just use one of the rejected terms for parsec, like astron.
-
@scribus Made-up units are always the way to go. You can borrow the units from Battlestar Galactica http://www.kobol.com/archives/timeunit.html for example

@thelastgherkin Yeah, it gives me a seriously "Jetsons" vibe in the temples, but it's a thought all the same.
