I actually wonder how "realistic" lightsaber duels are in the movies.
Or games for that matter.
I assume not very, but I'd figure other people might be able to explain where the major differences are.-
@gameragodzilla Honestly, as much as it makes for very poor cinema, stuff like the Obi Wan and Darth Vader fight in the original A New Hope would be the most realistic for an actual dual. It's not about who makes the winning move in a duel, especially one with laser swords one imagines. It's the one who makes the losing move. So you'd be mostly trying to wait out your opponent, or draw or goad them into making a misstep.

@maiyannah So most od the time you just spend waiting around and waving your sword a tiny bit before actually making a killing strike? Huh.
I guess that's more practical-
@gameragodzilla Either that or in the bind, yeah. The bind wouldn't be useful for a laser sword really though. With metal swords, you can feel the vibration when an opponent is going to make a movement, it's a "tell" to borrow poker language, and so you can counter-strike effectively, maybe even strike them down. But you won't have that kind of thing with a laser sword one imagines.

@maiyannah Well I guess that's where "The Force" comes in. Come to think of it, a lot of my time in Jedi Outcast is also spent trying to find openings to strike, as in that game, a one or two hits is enough to down someone and it's more the blocking that keeps them alive. So I guess that's a bit more realistic? Even if I'm running around, jumping 20 ft in the air and using the Force to knock people down for said opening.

@maiyannah Weren't they some of the most skilled and experienced swordfighters in that universe after all?

@nerthos Yeah, supposedly. Personally, I'm of two minds here. It's certainly more realistic for such a duel, but at the same time, it makes the fight scene kind of boring. There's some ways they probably could have tried to make it more interesting. But it's also hard to forget A New Hope was made on a relatively small budget, so it can be understood that they couldn't get as complicated as they might have wanted.

@maiyannah IMO the way they could make it both reasonable and flashy would be to introduce lightsaber-resistant armor, which is canon in the extended universe. That'd make it so that a normal hit isn't necessarily lethal and would force fighters to try to repeatedly hit the enemy to wear it off and be able to strike at the body itself.
