So, a question for all you pro-linux people. What distro would be best for running a server on a piece of crap computer in my closet? Needs to be low-resource intensive, but still powerful enough that I don't need to do stupid retarded things to set up networking/binaries and such.

@minti well, i know Puppy Linux is very resourse conserving, but im not sure about running a server. i would say find the program first, then test each distro that can run it.

@minti Arch Linux is really a base system running little things, but the installer can still get the network set up properly. It's a rolling-release distro, though, so not really useful for a very serious server.

@minti So far my current best-case option is to just run Debian with Gnome removed.

@minti Whatever you decide on, just remember that rsync is your friend.

@toksyuryel What does rsync actually do? I hear about it more often but I have no clue.

@omni It syncs your files with those of a remote server. It's like a stripped down version control where there is no version history or branching.

@toksyuryel Ah, I see.

@minti I run a Minecraft server off of Ubuntu server. The desktop version kills the old thing at idle, but server edition runs well with 3 players.

@minti I'd choose Linux! (and that's sadly the best answer I have *hangs head*) http://lmgtfy.com/?q=best+linux+distro+for+running+a+server
