  1. The thing I like most about Linux being recognized as a real platform now is that it makes Microsoft lose even more market share. We really needed more concurrence on the market, and the way Linux distributions work means that, instead of just Microsoft and Apple, hundreds of companies and non-profit organizations are now getting a chance to compete. Next up: BSD (hopefully).

    1. @omni One step at a time.

      1. @eaglehooves Nah, let me think 50 steps ahead. Hopefully I'll be right for once.

    2. @omni Why can't linux just stay in it's dirty little corner like it always has.

      1. @abigpony >Implying Linux hasn't been relatively big during the Unix days.

        1. @omni I literally never heard anything positive about anything Linux related until RDN. and that's on the rare occasion that anyone ever talked about it.

    3. @omni More platforms means less applications for each one. Like with consoles. If there's only one consoles, all games are for it. If there are three onsoles, you need to buy all three to play all games.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:02:45 UTC from web
      1. @nerthos Yes, but no. With most Linux distributions costing absolutely no money, you can't really say you will have to buy more.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:05:16 UTC from web
        1. @omni But you have to install many OSs, have many partitions running, etc. I personally preffer things like they are now. Windows is for games, Linux is for work, Apple is for wasting money.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:06:33 UTC from web
          1. @nerthos Not necessarily. If it goes cross platform, then it just means the Linux users don't have to keep a gaming partition.

            1. @eaglehooves Cross platform mean games will be even MORE expensive and complex, due to need of further development.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:09:26 UTC from web
              1. @nerthos If you make it cross-platform from the start and don't go "OMG DIRECTX 11 HURR DURR AWESOME" it's actually no more work. At most you'll spend somewhat more time compiling, because you need to compile multiple executables for different system, and testing to make sure it runs everywhere. Development itself doesn't have to take longer with techniques like OpenGL already being widely supported.

                1. @omni And then there's no point in buying new GPUs, and you hurt hardware market.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:12:13 UTC from web
                  1. @nerthos Gamers will most likely keep buying GPUs, as games progress quickly. And because people like shining stuff over well-working stuff the system usage in software like desktop environments keeps rising as well. I mean, really, Unity, GNOME3 and KDE all take not-much-less CPU power and RAM than the Windows environment does.

                    1. @omni Let's be blunt. Linux will not surpass Windows in the near future because it's nowhere near as profitable. Companies don't care about being fair, or how much claims of monopoly and moustache-twirling evil users talk of.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:16:56 UTC from web
                      1. @nerthos I never expected it to surpass Windows in the near future, the most I expect is it taking a few % market share away.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:18:11 UTC from web
              2. @nerthos Yet humble bundle games don't seem to have an issue doing that while still being cheaper than their Windows exclusive arcade counterparts.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:11:59 UTC from web
                1. @eaglehooves Humble bundle games are a weird concept, great and everything, but not as profitable as their counterparts.

        2. @omni But it takes technical know-how to install. Believe it or not, most people _don't_ have that knowledge!

          1. @redenchilada More and more stores are selling Ubuntu pre-installed. Especially in India it's gaining a huge boost currently.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:09:21 UTC from web
            1. @omni The big computer stores here sell computers with pre installed linux since at least 2005.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:11:14 UTC from web
            2. @omni The only time I ever saw a computer in a store with any form of Linux pre-installed was in a cheap, crappy-looking $200 netbook. And that was years ago.

    4. @omni A few games being ported to another operating system isn't going to destroy Windows' market share. That's wishful thinking.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:03:11 UTC from web
      1. @redenchilada Well, true, at very least not for the coming 20 or more years (most likely).

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:06:06 UTC from web
    5. @thatonepony Fair enough, a lot of people are merely afraid of chance. However, with Windows 8, a fair amount of people will at very least consider not to update, and this is the perfect time for another OS to strike in and try to get some customers.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:04:28 UTC from web
      1. @omni Yeah, like people thought Macs would take over when Windows 7 came out. *pfft*

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:05:33 UTC from web
        1. @abigpony Did people think that? With the insanely expensive prices of MACs? You can't want to have the whole market if most people can't even afford using it.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:07:38 UTC from web
          1. @omni yeah, pretty much everyone did. What with them dominating mobile, people thought the macs would catch on as well.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:08:41 UTC from web
      2. @omni Same happened with Windows Vista. Did people switch to Linux? No, they just stayed on XP until 7 came out. 8 will probably be ignored, and people will update when win7 stops working with new hardware.
