        2. @newpatrol I just felt my intelligence sink a bit, when I heard a user switched back from Linux to Windows for Hamachi, Java and Minecraft, while all those run just fine under Linux... >.>

          1. @omni Ugh!

            1. @toksyuryel Okay, turns out this is what happened: he downloaded a .rpm from the Java website and converted it to .deb and had issues installing it under Ubuntu. This is wrong on several levels...

              1. @omni ... I've barely touched Linux and I know better than that! :l

              2. @omni You can convert an RPM into a DEB in such a way that it works well enough to be confusing?

Sunday, 12-Aug-12 17:54:29 UTC from web
                1. @ceruleanspark Technically, converting between those formats should be possible with some easy tools, but normally you shouldn't have to do that at all.

                  1. @omni The obvious question is: Why does such a tool exist? It's like having a chainsaw that only cuts your hands off

Sunday, 12-Aug-12 17:56:51 UTC from web
                    1. @ceruleanspark It exists because there are publishers which (mostly due to lack of knowledge) only release .deb or .rpm files.

                    2. @ceruleanspark The tools are meant to be used by package managers, not by users.

                      1. @toksyuryel Derp, that's what I wanted to say (but failed at).

Sunday, 12-Aug-12 18:17:29 UTC from web
                2. @ceruleanspark 'alien' works quite well for converting them, with the fairly major caveat that what distro X chose as build options for package A is not necessarily the same as distro Y chose for package A. The more packages you try to convert that way, the higher your chances of trying to run something which thinks you have a feature you don't have.

                1. @toksyuryel I blame the Ubuntu repositories being small. If people can't find Minecraft in the "Software Centre" when they want to play it, they do stupid things.
