Will Pokemon Black and White be able to recognize X & Y's new pokemon? I hope they might have learned to make the games forward compatible through updates and patches.

@pony No way, they would lose money.

@araragi Or gain money! It would encourage buying all the versions for the story and characters and graphics with the incentive that you'd be able to obtain all pokemon solo.

@pony Why bother buying the new hot product if you could just cheat with a buddy who has it and get all the pokemons for free. Besides, I really don't think Nintendo is making money off of anything beyond White and Black 2.

@araragi If your objective is tho simply own all the pokemon that'd be fine, but if you want to play whatever other content is in other generations of the game then you'd have to buy the newer versions of course. For example, besides the story and characters there could be other perks like moves and items that can only be taught in new versions.

@pony But that would make a super mess of the old games, since I'm assuming some of the new pokemon learn moves specific to their generation. What, do they just not learn the move anymore? What if they have it when they're traded?

@araragi I don't think it'd be possible to do it with the current games. It'd have to be a feature they planned ahead with so it wouldn't mess things up. With glitches you know it's actually possible to trade pokemon with unique moves and species etc. from gen2 to gen1. You get glitch pokemon this way obviously, but some of them are nifty!

@pony So yeah, it's not happening.

@araragi I wish they'd make it happen with X & Y for future games, but it sounds like they won't

@pony Silly business move, argue it all you like, but the majority of people don't really care about the story in Pokemon games.

@araragi I agree about story being low on the list of priorities. Nintendo would have to be convinced that enough players would buy future games for other reasons like, I dunno, minigames and the ability to augment moves and stats a certain way or get limited edition pokemon legitimately.

@araragi and the future outdated games with the update engines built in and planned would also receive updates for new moves, items, types, etc.

@pony No. It won't work that way. They can't actually write to the cards outside of their dedicated save partition, which is a) in use and B) tiny anyway. So to "patch" it they'd need to write the patch to another storage device, which DS's prior to the "I" don't have.
-
@ceruleanspark well that's too bad. Maybe they'll think about it in the future.

@pony Well, now all DS units have storage as standard it's possible, but still not especially likely. They'd just shoehorn in engine changes and things to make it "impossible" to backport new pokemon. Like add a new type, for instance.
-
@ceruleanspark So, if I understand correctly, the DSi and forward has secondary storage. Are all 3DS games compatible with all DSs? Maybe to promote buying future versions of the game (and make players happy) after those future versions become outdated, they could create them with an update engine and increased space on the card itself. Would this maybe be possible?

@pony The new titles will not be playable on the "classic" DS, so do not have to be coded with the absence of internal storage in mind.
-
@ceruleanspark It sounds like they could manage it just fine, but like you said, it may be unlikely, especially if they believe sales will be higher without forward compatibility.
