Semi related note I have never been in a supermarket that was above 295 degrees K. I guess this is somehow a requirement when you have a lot of products on the shelves that can possibly spoil ?
That and to offset the heat that some of the fridges emit on the backside.
But I guess it would be really entertaining to watch coca-cola bottles violently explode when someone leaves them out in the unloading section for too long.
Its probably not going to affect consumers in a big way.Thursday, 25-Jul-19 11:48:16 UTC from web- Jonathan Chouinard likes this.

I have gotten my hands on a 'toy' that someone did not want to play with anymore. Said he did not care anymore since he thought it was broken since it would flash but not boot through afterwards. Or something like that.
Well I am going to give it a go, probably when I get back home, flash it myself ( or whatever it is you need to do ), whack it a few times. If nothing else I will just re-use the heat-pads and project-box. Also use the board components for desoldering practice.
Pretty sure this is the datasheet of the product http://rainbowdash.net/url/874964 ... If only there was some video showing how to do a simple project from point zero onwards. You know, like with all those Raspberry Pi YouTube video's out there.

@scribus I work in land registration - for the past two years I've just been updating existing registers (registering/removing mortgages, adding/removing proprietors, noting changes of name, updating property addresses, so on), but starting next month I'll be triaging first registrations, meaning I actually get to look at 200 year old leases and title plans and stuff and decide what should/shouldn't go on the register. It sounds more interesting than it actually is but as far as careers go it's somewhat interesting and viable (also we literally hire more people a year than we have work available for lol)

@tiff wow that actually don't sound bad

@scribus it's decently comfy, great atmosphere too so I can often get away with doing dick all and just talking to people

@thismightbeauser ... How about Biodegradeable Plastics ?
Jonathan Chouinard likes this. -
@drinkingpony I don't know enough about them to say, but I would be concerned about them being prone to allowing gunk to grow on food more easily and breaking down on the shelves. That would be a terrifying mess.
-
@thismightbeauser This is unlikely since room-temperature is too low for most if not all biodegradeable plastic to actually biodegrade ( Room temperature is about just short of 300 Kelvin, compared to 325 at which most biodegradeable plastic I know needs to start degrading ).
I guess the biggest caveat is 'is it actually better in the long run ?'. People more read in on this topic than I am are still fighting amongst eachother on that.
My biggest gripe is that biodegradeable plastics will do NOTHING for the ocean-problem, even if all the plastic that is currently in the ocean were to change into some sort of biodegradeable plastic over night ( by means of magical fairy, genie, monkeypaw, time-travel-shenanigans, quantum-flux-destabilisation, or unexplainably )... The oceans are too cold to decompose that mess.
Other problem is that if you were to just throw biodegradeable plastic on a landfill it is actually more toxic for the environment due to methane-emissions.Jonathan Chouinard likes this.

After several encounters with my most recent enemy (electricity-eating fungi) I've decided to study the damn things and figure out how to eradicate them.
They're not actively harmful, but colonies form in low-current circuits, and cause devices to stop working. Phone lines and tv remotes are the two places I most often find them in, and even though I fully clean the devices, after a while the fungi shows up again.Thursday, 18-Jul-19 08:18:40 UTC from web-
@scribus @drinkingpony Sub-zero doesn't kill them, considering they made a colony on the phone line box thing outside despite a week of antartic wind consistently dropping the temperature below 0ºC
Haven't tried suffocation. I've used alcohol and contact cleaner to completely clean them off but they show up again. They're probably airborne as there's no way they could have gotten inside the tv remote by contact. -
@nerthos Here is a stupid idea... Try hairspray.
Nono, not on them, remove them first and then see if hairsprayed components inhitbit their growth.
Also, have you considered that it is not fungus you are dealing with but some form of oxydation ?Jonathan Chouinard likes this. -

It is constructed! However it is too late to power it up. My eyes are tired enough. First impression: It's cheap and it shows at every corner. Despite the "Pro" in its name it feels far from it. The front (and back) plate where the rods and screw rod for the table are attached to is made of bakelite. I expected aluminium. On the other hand it seems to be thick and sturdy. The only real bummers are the plastic spindle holder and the plastic holders for the bushings for sliding on the rods and the plastic screw rod nut holder. I'll test it tomorrow or so before my complaints get any validity. I mean I got what I paid for: A cheap CNC for cheap money. Baby's first CNC. http://rainbowdash.net/attachment/874944

@adiwan I do not know what bakelite is. Nor do I know what that circuit boards looks like but I guess that is where the pro comes from ( picture please )
Now you might want to check before you begin if the thing is 'smart' enough to not go out of bounds and destroy itself. I did a little bit of reading on them machines.Jonathan Chouinard likes this. -
@drinkingpony Bakelite is a type of plastic. Many products were made of bakelite until modern plastics like ABS were invented. And it will destroy itself because it lacks any endstop switches but I will install some that I have laying around. The pro aspect of it is that it has support for lasers and the spindle is a bit more precise. I will test it when I come back from work.
