It's so that, when visiting someone else's profile or a group page, you can automatically address them without forgetting to put their username or the !<span class=\"vcard\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rainbowdash.net\/group\/470\/id\" class=\"url\" title=\"Example Group (groupname)\"><span class=\"fn nickname\">groupname<\/span><\/a><\/span> in the post.  (Helpful for newponies who commonly do this.)  Most folks post on the Public or Personal timelines, where the name isn't already filled out for you."}
