As far asI've seen, it's not co-op and, from what I've read and heard, is that he's in the process of losing his sanity in 2, leading the fighting against soldiers to become believable to an extent.  I also hear it's not all on the snow world, that's just a segment. I do hear they screwed up necromorphs pretty nasty, though. They were hype in the last games from what I've seen.
