There's a whole branch of critical studies on that, it's generally referred to as the death of the author. A creator's interpretation of their work isn't necessary any more valid than any individual's interpretation of said work, that's a foundation criticism of any media works on. A good example I like to use is that Lovecraft was a huuuge racist and xenophobe, but I've read and enjoyed a ton of his works in spite of some of his views being reflective in his works because I think he has excellent prose and narrative structure."}
