Nowadays it's starting to be popular to lift those restrictions but until not long ago in a lot of countries you could get a name rejected when doing the after-birth paperwork. It was mostly so people didn't give kids stupid names or poorly written ones I think. Like you could call a kid &quot;john&quot; but not &quot;shoouhne&quot;, nor name the kid &quot;brick&quot;. Brazil was one of the exceptions as you could give your kid whatever name you wanted, at most you'd be stopped from naming the kid a swearword if the clerk wasn't a jerk."}
