It's the Apple (or Mercedes, or what have you) Corollary to the Fast-Food Economics theory: If you put out a product where people even think that they are getting a higher quality product than a popular but low-quality mass market version of that product, there will be a usually-small (but not always; see iPhone) but much wealthier group of people willing to pay through the nose for that product.
