Along with Final Fantasy, it's one of Japan's two big RPG series. The main difference being, Final Fantasy tends to reinvent a lot of itself each time, at least since 7, whereas Dragon Quest has thus far stayed largely the same, just putting a slight polish and a new story on top of what's mostly the same style of gameplay.
