In past societies (especially medieval societies) what you did for a living was what you were. If you were a farmer, this was your reason in life. When industrialisation kept on, we parted from our work pieces and work was more and more about getting money. So today, we work to get money which lets us do what we want, that is the individual purpose of work today. I study to get a job which fulfills me on it's own, but that is pure luxury today.
