They only work by avoiding the most basic social protocols. When I pick up somepony I don't know I greet them by speaking the name, pronounced like a question. The person in question than starts to smile, loosing the slight frown everyone waiting for a strange pickup wears, and returns my name. We shake hooves and perform a proper introduction.</span>
