I've done some messing around with our branch of StatusNet to alleviate some of the drawbacks from that, such as making notices from remote users visible on Public (but only when the user browsing is subscribed to them, so that something that didn't necessarily follow our instance's ruleset wasn't exposed to the entire userbase).</html>
