I actually didn't manage to work that out until I watched the replay of my 150cc (third) playthrough. So I tried it in Mirror mode but kept messing up because of going 2fast. But yeah, stuff like that, essentially putting a Zelda-esque puzzle on the track, as well as the rupees and item sound effects of course, is what did it for me too.
