I also found that Jayne was a weak character, and Whedon's always been weak with dialogue (at least from what I have seen by him). That being said, I felt Malcolm was a great main character and had the spunk appropriate for the tone of the series. Also Zoe and Wash had a really entertaining relationship dynamic between them throughout the series that was one of its highlights for me.
